when they pip the wrong end they are still a couple of days from hatching- think of it this way- normally when they pip the correct end, they take a day in the air cell to breathe before piping an outer hole- the may take another day with just an outer pip, when they pip the lower end they don't get a day in the inner airsack so if you try and help them they will be bloody, and not yolk absorbed yet- the probably will need help but not right away- when the pip the wrong end I make sure the beak can breathe but try'n leave it for a bit.
I also leave it for a while when it's pipped at the wrong end. I had some pictures of one that I helped out though, because by half a day later, it wasn't any bigger a pip. When they pip on the pointy end, they will still try and turn. If they get turned a bit, and get stuck in the middle, they will suffocate.
I helped three of my BO's out this last hatch, they are doing great!
You can see the little hole where it had moved towards the middle of the egg. No other pips during that move, still just the
pip at the top of the egg. It would have run out of oxygen pretty quick.
Here it is with it's beak cleared, to hang out for a while.

After a few hrs. I check again, Make sure there isn't much blood, which there wasn't on this one, so pulled the head out and made sure I got the feet up front..there is another one pipped on top.
Three of them with a pip at the wrong end, ended up like this one.

Editing to say, when you buy shipped eggs as I do, I don't want to take any chances. So many things go wrong during shipping, and often, they need help. Those of you that have eggs to bring in from outside are soo lucky. Don't have to worry about those wonky air sacs, or fluid in the egg because of the egg being too cold..then warm..too cold..then warm. Unless..you forgot to go get them early enough out of the cold.
