The first 6 were wreaking havoc in the incubator so we moved them to the mini brooder for tonight. Chickie on the left looks comfy, doesn't he/she?

How and when do I sex the babies?

Are these EE's? If they have the pea comb, you can check the little combs for the rows. Those that look to have three rows, are usually boys, and the ones with a single row is the girl. Yes, the girls will feather out more quickly. Sure are cute little chipmunks.

These are Ameraucana x Golden and Red Sex Links does that qualify as an EE? I've never known exactly what an EE is, I know Easter Egger but what breeds make an EE.

An easter egger is any cross with an ameraucana to make a colored egg layer.

I feel like I miss so much!
A deal of it is to do with the time difference. When I get up and look here there are only a few folk on - But as with today all the activity has happened while I was sleeping! Darn

Well over 100 posts to catch up on so I have just flicked through and find it hard to keep up and see who has hatched and who is still waiting.

Tonight for me is LOCKDOWN!!!!! Yeahhhhh

I am all excited but don;t have much hope?
After last year I have done NOTHING to these eggs.
I have not monitored temp or humidity -
I have NOT candled appart from one failed atempt early on.
All I have done is turn them 3 times daily and top up the water trough under the eggs.
Tonight I will turn for the last time fill up the outer ring under the eggs to the top as the bator instructs and then I am going to chill out and ignor it for a week - Or at least until I hear a chirp!

Darn you all know I will be clucking over them like a mother hen!

Day 6: I just candled all 31 of my eggs this morning, and all are beautifully fertilized and veining. Very exciting! Of course the maran eggs I can just see a darkness on one side of the egg, no veining. My roosters did well

I'm a nurse, so I have no qualms about getting down and dirty. It also poses the moral question as to what to do with unwanted males. Ah.....

That is an interesting article! I don't know if I could do it myself. Well, I could do it, but I am not motivated because I don't mind having roosters. Also, anyone venturing to try vent sexing needs to be careful because you can damage the roos' parts if you're not careful (from what I've heard).

There is peeping! And pipping! First two out the gate, numbers 15 and 11! I made paper towel wedges to prop the fat ends up just a tad, and marked the air cells to put the last side up. Both pipped exactly where I hoped they would, so that's exciting!

Do older eggs take longer to hatch in anyone's experience?

I was joking. That is my turkey's, Max's, head. He is always standing on the other side of my computer leaning over to check out what I'm reading. If you turn it upside down you can probably recognize the shape of his head.
