Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

I have a beginner question. When I laid all the eggs on their sides this morning for lockdown, it was a really tight fit. They all laid down, but they are all touching/wedged pretty good. Do they need room to push the egg shell of to hatch? Or will they be fine?

How far along are they?
Do you know how to candle?
They do need room to hatch. I am thinking that if you have not candled, there is a chance that you
may have some eggs that are not fertile or developing and they could be removed before hatch time.

I like to candle- before look for the clear pointy tips it is not ready for lockdown
an egg should have a swoop in it like this egg before it is ready. some times I will have two incubators going one for slower eggs and one that has the swoop.

Depending on how my next hatch goes I'll buy a big bag... But I didn't want to get a ton and not have any babies to eat it. Still need to get a feeder and waterer for my brooder. I'm going to get it all put together tonight and decide whether to hook it up in the shed or in my room. I really can't sleep with any lights in the room though.... I've had my incubator set up in my closet and it's worked well since it's pretty insulated from temp swings. But I feel like having a heat lamp set up in my closet would be kinda dangerous...

my chick with curled toes now has a leg problem too... I cannot decide whether or not it is a slipped tendon.

Hi Everyone,

I have a bator full of button quail eggs. Just put them in on Sunday @ 1:30pm. First time hatching quail there eggs are soo tiny. My temps are steady and humidity is good. If I did my calculations right I just go in to lockdown on the 22nd and hope to start hatching the 24th . Anyone else have eggs due the same time?

Just got a egg from the ex battery hen!!


Since she hasn't laid much, and the last time she was with a rooster was I'm December. Would the egg be fertile? I want to know if I could put it in the incubator.

I am so sorry. I have not had any luck with a slipped tendon...........
I hope someone else can help you...............

I did candle before lockdown and they are all moving and good. I guess if they do start hatching I will try to take them out quickly. It is pretty dry here in the desert so I worry about the humidity, but if I don't take them out after they hatch I am afraid I won't have enough room. Thanks to everyone who has been giving me suggestions on how to start hatching. I really appreciate it!
