Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Hi everyone. I'm carcar80 and I'm addicted to chickens.

Seriously though, I'm about to put chicken eggs in my incubator for the first time, and I have a couple of questions. I have hatched out ducklings several times but this is my first time with chicks. I'm realizing now, I should NOT have started with "high value" eggs. LOL! I'm a nervous wreck and they're not even in yet!

I have just a little still-air LG, for reference.

Okay. This is how I'm choosing to do my eggs. I've never crated before. I used a cardboard carton and cut the sides down a bit.
First question, how far am I supposed to lean them? Like, is there a common object (or size of object) that people use?

Here is a link to watch, she has her eggs sitting straight up, most people will put them at an angle. If you watch, towards the end, you will see that there are holes in the bottom of the carton spots. Gives the egg a chance for more air circulation. Usually the egg carton isn't cut down until it's time for lock down, but yours look pretty steady. If they are in a reg. carton during incubation, you can lean them back and forth easier with something.

Thanks! I actually ended up putting them all in the carton you see with the taller centers.. They seem really secure in there, even If I lean them more than I would to turn, so I feel good about it.

I did end up cutting the bottoms out too, saw that somewhere earlier (maybe I further back in this thread??)

Now, I just need to find which book to use under the bator. I've decided to lean the whole bator- I have a bad habit of messing/candling WAY too much, lol, so this will help with that.

I knew those college books would come in handy again one day! ;)

With the terrible storms we are expecting tonight, I'm actually glad I didn't come home and toss them straight in. They will spend the night on the counter and go in Tomorrow morning.

I went out this evening and heard little peeps from under our hen. Maybe in the next couple of days I will get to see them and take some pictures. Can hardly wait to see what they look like as this is the first we have hatched.

She is a Black Australorp sitting on a mix of Black Australorp, RIR, Plymouth Rock, And Dark Brahma Bantam eggs. The Roo is a Plymouth Rock, no telling what they are going to look like. Can't wait to see if she wants to sit on more eggs, if she does I have some banty eggs for her.

Where do you live in GA? We have a son in Powder Springs right now. I thought the weather was doing better! I will have to look up that area and see what's up. GA. is a beautiful state. He loves it there. He will be home in Oct. Can't wait. He is serving a mission for our church right now. He loves the people there. I used to live in Florida. Then, a small time in NC...then VA. then to here..so for me to be hearing of all of this cold storm business is unreal. Is is lightening storms tonight? ..I do remember reading that you were supposed to get some of that. My son wrote us and told us about his first thunder storm..ha..I had tried to warn him of them. Florida gets them pretty bad too, as most know.

Hi, yes PS is very near my old hometown so I know exactly were he is. And yes, the weather appears to have broken up before hitting us. Just went out and there's definitely something brewing but not of the magnitude we had expected. *whew!!*

I had actually woken up because of a bad dream ABOUT said weather. LOL

LOL, I haven't gone to bed yet, can't sleep, it's 1:120 here. I need to stop this! I need sleep! Glad your weather isn't so bad.
You said that PS is near your old hometown. Where do you live now? Ha..you don't need to answer back now..go to bed! No more bad dreams, ya hear?

Hope your weather wasn't too bad there. Now I'm about 45min or so from PS. :)

So. Here is where I am now. I want to set my eggs like, now. If I have my thermometer at THIS height, what should my temp be? Or can I just (pleeeeease) leave it on the screen and shoot for 99.5 like always??
