How did the hatch go? I've been waiting patiently

Hey Jack, how are your fluffies growing?!

Of 24 that went into lockdown we have 13 happy babies, 8 Araucanas and 5 Wyandottes. 10 eggs failed to pip and one we put into lockdown wasn't a full term chick, not sure how that one snuck through.
If nothing else we are getting better at candleing!

Bit sad that we 'lost' 10 late term babies, all I can put it down to was the wretched incubator giving up on the auto-turn for a day or so around day 15. The chicks were fully formed but never made a move to pip, I'm guessing they were stuck. Fingers crossed the 20 I have in the incubator now keep on going!

Will get some pictures later on when my camera is charged. The Wyandottes sure are pretty chicks.

Quote:I think it is more likely to be due to humidity being not quite right than to auto-turning failing around day 15 because turning is most important in the first two weeks while they are still developing blood vessels while high or low humidity at any stage can affect them negatively.

That is a quick hatch on your Araucana, Dorper! That's awesome! I hope you have even more little fuzz-butts running around by now! They look so stinkin' cute in the picture! Love love love love!!!

ChickenLady - congrats on your chicks! It's always exciting stuff!

Things on my end have been rather...frustrating...but not bad. I had one egg that had externally pipped INSIDE the incubator when I went to move the entire clutch into lockdown on day 18. The chick didn't end up making it, but the others are going strong (just taking awhile). I see lots of activity, but none are hatched yet. I am worried about the Ayam Cemani eggs, as I can't see any signs from those. So I'm going to try to be patient.

Temp and humidity have remained consistent in my hatcher. But I am thinking I need to test my Janoel 48 for cold spots. I seem to be having a lot of late hatches.

CONGRATS to all the new chicks, though!

....hope they are just teasing you...

..I so wish we could bring them in here, they are awesome looking birds.

We candled our next eggs last night (as I went out to buy 1 dozen more to fill the incubators, and was given 4 dozen instead!!) and we found a whole patch in one of the Janoel 48s that were empty. Now, these eggs all came from the same place and it just seemed odd that this one patch were all infertile - or I started to wonder if the incubator is not even and those ones were in a cold spot?
Also possible though one carton of that batch were from a rooster not up to his job, oh if only this were all a bit more defined life would be much easier!!!!

Only good thing was the empties came out and all the incubators are now full - so of course I have found some more Araucana eggs from a different supplier.....might end up putting the 'dedicated' hatcher back to work as an incubator for a couple of weeks! With hubby about to have major surgery I can see us taking a break from incubating shortly so want to have as many chicks growing up as possible before we have to stop. 3 incubators, 1 hatcher, half a dozen brooders and youngsters outside are just too much for me to cope with along with 150 lambing ewes as well!

When are your eggs due to actually hatch Marie?

BTW ALL the Araucanas did the same thing - pipped to OUT in under 30 minutes each. And they didn't just unzip and emerge like 'normal' chicks, no, they all seemed to explode out of their shells at 100 miles per hour. Bits of shell flew all over the hatcher! And they were all up and running in about 30 minutes of hatching, they just seemed to be in a hurry. Eggs were lovely and dry which was lucky or else I would be cleaning that hatcher for months!! I expected them to be quite a bit smaller than the Wyandotte chicks, going on the difference in the egg size yet they are all about the same size.

Hi all, I think I have a problem. Does anyone know off hand how often eggs turn in a Janoel 48 incubator? I have a sneaking suspicion that my egg turner is not working. Very possible from day one. Everytime I have checked the eggs they have always been leaning to the right side. Never thought much about it until today. Each time I've checked on them it is leaned to the right. Just not certain how often the egg turner rotates. If you know how often they rotate can you please share with me. My manual doesn't mention how often. Thank you!

Hi Chickenlady, sorry to hear you may be having problems.
One of our Janoel 48s gave up turning during the last batch, possibly took me a couple of days to catch up with it, grrr, I still think it had something to do with the high number of fail to pips we had.

They turn every 2 hours.

Check the plastic clip behind the motor. It attaches the motor to the rocking arms - in our case this clip had worked its way loose and eventually come off, so while the motor was whirring away every 2 hours it was no longer connected to the rocking arms so the eggs weren't turning.
The clip slides into a groove in the plastic bar that the rocking arms connect to - hope that makes sense. If you have a look inside the incubator you will be able to work out what I am talking about (I hope!!)

We just had to slide the clip back into the groove and away she went, no problems.

Other thing we found with it was the rocking arms are not very strong and if it is full of big heavy eggs they don't turn very well. OH strengthened ours by riveting on a thin (very thin) piece of metal to the side of each arm (where it is solid) and now it doesn't bow in the middle of the row and works very well.

Incidentally I just bought 2 'new model' Janoel 48s and the rocker trays are made of much sterner stuff, those incubators have a solid plastic base not see through - painful for watching what's going on but they seem to be much better quality than the clear bottom ones, and they also hold temp & humidity much better. My original clear one I am now trying to use as a dedicated hatcher.

***Just thought of something else - if you hold down the reset button on the left of the machine, near the countdown timer, it will wipe out your day count, but will reset the 2 hour timer and force the machine to turn right away - this is the easiest way to check if she is turning or not. I do it with mine every now and then just to make sure all is well.

Hi dorpersheep, thank for all the great info. I will recheck it with hitting the reset button, but it still wasn't working last night after unplugging and replugging in the tray. The eggs are day 14 today. Candled them last night & there is definitely a developing chick in there, just not certain how they will come out. I'm pretty certain that the turner wasn't working the whole 14 days. On day 16 & 17 of my Christmas hatch it was making a lot of noise, it has never done that before. This is a new incubator from this past spring. My Christmas-hatch-along was only second hatch in it Grrr. I had 6 eggs in my LG incubator that I had moved to the Janoel. On day 18 I moved a large number of eggs from the Janoel into lockdown in my LG incubator. I would check the Janoel and add water when needed. I'm doing a dry hatch so water wasn't needed often, but started noticing that each time I checked them. The tray was tilted to the right. I didn't think about it much until I started paying closer attention the past 2 days. I don't think it's been working at all throughout the past 14 days. Hopefully I won't end up with very deformed chicks. :(

Ok, thought I'd try and get a picture of this clip I am talking about - as it is not the wiring plug but rather part of the bodywork if you like.
See attached - I am talking about the clip directly behind the motor, it should be locked into the groove but in our case it worked its way out of the top.

Also, just cause I'm taking photos, a pic of OHs quick fix to stop the arms from bending under heavy eggs. (Hacksaw blades! Perfect!)

Hope this helps.
And from what I know, I don't think you would end up with deformed chicks, but if the yolks get stuck to the egg shells it makes it hard for them to turn around ready to hatch, so they fail to pip.
