YA, I have to agree this time of year. She's going to be hatching in the Spring for sure.

Maybe you can mail your excess males to someone that needs male breeders and try again later. Grow them big so someone just has to have those big boys.

Hey, the big boys are hard to find.

Once I raise 'em, I get attached to them. I was in their pen today while they ran around letting me pet them, brushing up against my legs... nope, they get to stay here.

I will just have to wear ear plugs to sleep.

5 weeks old on Thursday. One for sure boy (color - wild). One maybe boy -- Manchurian. Less spotting than the other one. OK so that one is probably a boy.

Try covering with a dark cloth in the evening, like you would a house bird.
Speckling on breast on a M Gold s/b a female. (some of mine are lightly speckled on the breast).
Dang fate must have made a mistake there. Or decided to give you a break.

Oh, most of them are in the basement. It's pitch black down there. They still let me know that morning has arrived. And, occasionally they let loose in the middle of the night. Both the coturnix & button quail do.

They are quiet most of the night, though. Once 8 or 9 gets here they start in though, even with it dark. It's okay, though, because most days the dog demands out about then, too.

Only one crowing boy in the garage, and he doesn't bother me. He never crows much. He feels secure with his ladies, I guess.

And, as far as fate goes....If I don't have some girls this time, then fate's fate might have something to do with a boot getting planted right....

I hope they do, too! Do you have your brooder set up and warmed to temp in case they hatch early? Remember, these babies can't wait a long time like chicken chicks. They need to be into that brooder within the first day eating and drinking to be healthy.

I use shelf liner (the spongy rubbery stuff) on the floor. It's the best. That way there is no possibility of food confusion and it's also super easy for them to walk on it. No slips, and virtually no chance of splay leg from the flooring.

If you have a little beanie baby or something, toss it in. They like to cuddle up to it under the lamp. I have a turkey beanie baby that is the most popular one here.

Hope all goes well!

Edited to add: You will find that once they start to zip they will probably be fully hatched in a few minutes. So don't go far if you want to watch.

Yep, everything is set up. All my chicks, ducklings and now baby Quail are inside a small heated building. I have some chicks in there right now too so its already warm. I only have 5 eggs in the bator and I don't know if any are growing because I can't candle them! Its killing me!
