JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Thought I would cool you down a lil... Here's my driveway...our snowpile is almost as high as the truck...and my hutch has about a foot of snow on the outside of it. Forget about the run...

Everyone is doing ok. I did lose 3 chicks from my silkie/orp hatch. I had another hatch last week and it went well...little beliums and hamburg and some auction chicks. Very cute lil bunch...like 12. They are all looking healthy and good!

I have a whole litter due on Valentine's Day and then the ones I am most excited about are due next week...some Svart Hona chicks. First round the post office got me the overnight package in 3 days instead of one and the eggs just near froze. Very very sad.

So, things are very busy here...I am back at school teaching two classes this semester and taking one. So much for retirement.

I am glad your chicks are doing well. Is their back healing now? Could it have been from being too hot too?  Was it mostly those chicks that survived?
Oh my! We have to drive a few hours north before we ever see snow. It just doesn't snow here. I'm not complaining, I don't live in a place that snows because I really don't like snow. We do try to take the kids up north once a year to play in the snow. It's fun for the day but I could never live with snow. I'd never get anything done because all I wanna do is curl up in a blanket when I'm cold.

Glad you are having fun with all your hatches, that excitement of watching them hatch after all your work is the best ever.

My chicks backs do seem to be healing, it's just sad looking at them all raggedy. I'm not really sure if the ones left are the ones that had got pecked before the heat lamp fiasco or if the missing feathers are due to the heat exhaustion. But I am sure they will come around. My one black one has an interesting pattern on its chest so I can't wait to see what it feathers out to look like. We have 2 that don't appear to have combs and 2 that have small ones so if that is any indicator of roos vs pullets we may have 2 of each. I'm thinking I won't know what the polish is until it either crows or lays.

thanks. They were loving it, I wish I had more time to let them explore longer today but I don't trust just letting them roam without me being right there. Don't wanna lose these 5.

I'm not sure what a long winter is like, honestly we probably had about a week of a "winter". We have LONG summers. It's already in the 80s here, I'm not complaining because in a couple months we will probably be in the 100s and I'll have to freeze water bottles to keep my girls cool.

How are your babies doing?

My babies are doing great, they will have some new roommate soon with my upcoming hatch. They will be 2 weeks by then and I'll just have to watch and see if the LF chicks run Rikshaw over them. I'm hoping they will have a couple of weeks of company. I don't blame you for not letting the little ones out without supervision. At this age unless they are out with a broody momma there are just too many dangers. A couple of my 7 week olds ventured outside the coop door in the snow yesterday. The others aren't brave enough yet, they will stand at the doorway and look, but won't get down on the ground lol.

Lol...Mine are standing in the doorway looking out too. They just don't want to touch that white stuff!

I got up at 4:30 today. Was at the parking lot of TSC by 8 am looking for another something for a brooder. I got a cool liner but it was like $42...a little high. I just can't find a tote I like enough...back the the dollar store after class and bought another two totes...thinking I can cut the ends off and duct tape them together...duh right.

Then decide to check out the hardware store in that Village. Center isle are pre-cut boards 1x. It was like the light shined down on them and went "AHHHHH" So, I am making a wooden box brooder now. Had to have something big enough to fit the new brinsea brooder 50 chick thing....it's huge. So, here I sit with tea in my hand procrastinating...because I need some brackets.

I also need to weigh and candle and figure out how the heck I am going to do a lockdown in the new cabinet. Again, all i want to do is drink tea and look at BYC.

Lol Purpletie3, good luck :)

Thanks...I just finished my candling and weighing and booting of the blanks. So, now I have to go find my manual and see how to hatch in the cabinet. I am not sure if I should fire up the hovabator as a backup incase I royally goof this up. Should be interesting getting the humidity that high in that huge cabinet.
