JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Thanks! And it looks like I'm about to start all over again! I just ordered 2 dozen black copper Marans eggs, and I'll go to pick them up in a few days once the breeder collects them for me. Guess I'm in on the Feb HAL too

Here are the ones that hatched over night. I have duck due on the 23rd and chicks maybe by the 20th.

Me too! I've got a hatch due this weekend and next.. And then I set BCM today for a 2/5 hatch.

Still can't believe I wasn't even planning ONE hatch this winter!!

Scratch that.. Hatches are 1/17, 1/24, 2/1 and 2/4.. Squeezed those last two a little close, but the Marans were a rash purchase, lol!

So, final count for me looks to be 5 EEs and 2 Silkies. 2 of the EEs are still absorbing blood/yolk, but I had to remove the shell from their eggs because they both pipped at the wrong end of the egg. I took out all the left over eggs and candled them, then eggtopsied them (2 Silkie, 5 EE). They had all passed. The one Silkie egg I thought had quit before lock down had, indeed, quit. One of the EEs was in the right position, made its way through the internal membrane but was too large to be able to move enough to pip through the shell. If I would have checked them last night, I probably could have saved it, but thats the way it goes sometimes. The rest of the eggs were all malpositioned. Maybe because I didn't turn them the first 4 days, or my low temperature during the beginning stages? I don't know, but I'm happy I have chicks in my bator! I'll post pics of everyone when they're fluffy and in the brooder :)  For my first go with shipped eggs, I'm pretty pleased with myself after reading all of the horror stories about them!
congrats on the chicks that hatched. Sorry about the losses.

Well, we're down now to 30 TJ's eggs. One this morning just didn't look right compared to the others....

BAD egg

Again, a non-moving embryo slammed up against the shell as opposed to floating in the middle. And notice the absence of veining as compared to the egg below. The albumen (egg white) appears to have that kind of clear egg bright glow because all the blood has stopped circulating in the veins and pooled back into the chick.

GOOD egg

Lockdown is tomorrow!

And who doesn't like a cute chick picture?!?

Here's Oops, the Light Brahma x Blue-Laced Wyandotte cross hatched 1/3/15.

The Seller's replacement purebred eggs arrived today, but a tad chilled... I hope they didn't freeze in transit. Guess we'll know in a week or so at first candling. They are resting right now to get to room temps and restore air cell integrity. Will probably set late tomorrow... Guess I need to plan to join the February HAL!

(edited to correct hatch date)
