JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Day 19 for my 4 eggs, all have externally pipped, 1 has hatched. Very amazing because on day 13 I found out
that my turner had not worked from day 1.

That is great that they are hatching even though they were not turned for so long. I am learning, especially with shipped eggs, that it is more important to let them develop significantly than it is to turn or tilt them at all. Your experience really confirms that for me.

I have not had good results with shipped eggs to date. For the Christmas hatch-a-long I had 41 shipped eggs, 6 of them hatched. I had lots of clears, wonky air cells & early quitters. I would have to try it again to be able to speculate if it is possible to get a good hatch rate with shipped eggs. These four are my own stock. As soon as they were layed I put them in the incubator.

Yay!

I candled my eggs set on the 29th. 10 clears out of 42 set. The cold is hard on hatching here. Sometimes it's hard for me to know if an egg was left in the cold too long cause sometimes one of the ladies will decide to sit on them for a while and rewarm them before I get out to collect. I have a couple more dozen saved up and hope to set my third round of eggs at the end of the week. Then I might need to take a break as winter temps have really set in here and I don't heat the coop or the breeding pen.

We took a day 10 peek, 5 sikie eggs gave up or were clear. The other 7, 2 are questionable, 5 were dancing.
Removed 2 brown eggs that gave up early, and 1 blue egg
So weve got 18 left in.
Thank goodness only 11 days left

good luck, I hope they hatch for you.

Any progress yet? I hope all goes well for you.
Thank you both.

So today is day 23(really 24, power outages made them behind) i have one male chick that finished hatching last night. On the night of day 22 i candled the eggs cause there were not pips at all but this one guy kept rocking and rolling on day 20 and 21 but the night of day 22 and nothing. i found out when i candled him he was shrink wrapped. So i assisted, opened his egg, moistened his membrane and figured out he would have had a hard time hatching anyhow. He was not only upside down but also had his head over his wing to the right, so i dont think he would have hatched at all if i had not given him moisture. he ended up doing his internal pip about 6hrs later and started cheeping away. i put A&D ointment on the membrane and left him in the bator with a napkin kind of perched on top just to keep the fan off of him.

As of last night when i went to bed none of the other 5 chicks had internally or externally pipped, so when i get home from work i am going to investigate.

On a side note his right foot seems to be slightly deformed. his middle toe curls over to the right instead of going flat making him have a hard time walking, pretty much looks like he is drunk. So over to the fix-it forum i go.

EDIT: OH just texted to tell me he dropped a can of liquid wrench on the duck eggs i just got last night and cracked 2....grr
