JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Sounds like there are several people having good hatches. Congrats! Gentry I'm sorry your chicks have issues, I hope someone has some suggestions for you, I don't know enough to help you out.

My day 21 doesn't end until about 1130pm but I'm thinking my hatch is done. My first chick hatched Friday about noon and the most recent one hatched about 630am this morning. Started with 28 eggs, had 6 clears that I tossed at day 10, 18 hatched, 1 pipped into a vein and died before hatching, and I have 3 eggs left in the incubator that I will give till tomorrow. I had to get the chicks and all the shells out though because the smell was killing me.

Here are some pics, I'll try to take more individual pictures tomorrow after the chicks have fluffed up some more and had time to rest in their new home.

Alright I think I am ending the day with.... wait for it.... 17 hatched chicks out of my 22 eggs! Holy cow! 3 eggs haven't done anything and 2 have pipped however 1 pipped yesterday morning and hasn't done a single thing since so I think it may have died at some point and the 2nd one pipped yesterday evening, I believe it's still alive though so maybe it'll hatch before I go to bed. I am so incredibly happy with these results and even if the other 5 don't make it out I know I did everything I could and needed to in order to get them to hatch this time around! But I am not giving up hope on those eggs yet because hatch day doesn't even technically start until 11:20pm tonight! I'm thinking the temp spike I had while I was in the hospital sped up the growth of these chicks, I know it's not unusual to have a few early chicks but to have 17 early birds I think the temp must have contributed to that. I still can't believe I have 17 chicks in my incubator!!

How's your hatch going Purpletie3??

. I am so very very very happy you have all these blessed little chickee's!!!!! This is such a different outcome than last minute months hatchers!!!! Get some rest, you are going to need it!!! Can't wait to see pics also!

Day 19 here...so, my Hovabator is having temp fluctuations like mad bc we are so cold and drafty here. I have the eggs from Bobbi Porto & want them to hatch. Especially, since I drove them 1400 miles home. So, I stuffed all I could in my little brinsea mini...7 silkies and 1 orpington. That left me with 6 silkies and three orpingtons in the Hovabator. Along with a lot of canning jars full of water for temp stabilization.

So today is 19...hit day 20 @ 8pm tonight! But honestly, my attention has been on my 3 month olds who apparently got what I can tell is coccidiosis. I lost two almost instantly and the other 5 are pooping blood. My brooder looks like a crime scene. I didn't sleep at all last night bc I was afraid of waking of to more dead babies...I am sitting on pins and needles at this point. I have them medicated & they are eating and drinking & I am praying. These are all the hens I drove to Florida for and Lancaster. Huge investment in this brooder...

Those are great pics! Wow, what a successful hatch! Woot woot! You must be relieved!!!

Chicks B and C

B is about 24 hours old and severely cross-beaked.

C hatched sometime during the night (was stuck all day yesterday with only a dime size hole. Last night, I cracked the shell just a little and put a few drops of warm water on it to help it detach from the shell and then left it alone. It finished hatching sometime during the night). C is now about 12 hours old and just flops around on its back.

Again, can I do something to help, do nothing, or euthanize?

Poor little things. My little one looked like the eye on yours with a crossbeam and messed up abdomen. We culled it. Crossbeaks can survive. The bubble may be eye pressure...the eye bubble on mine reduced and I am sure it was blind. It was stuck and I cracked it out.

Check out the crossbeam and chick section on here. Best of luck. Difficult decision.

Here's my official pic from this weekend's hatch. A little breather now til lockdown again Wednesday. :lau

@Gentry1350 I am so sorry for your chicks. It's agonizing to watch and have to make decisions. :confused:g

Did these all hatch unassisted? Amazing if so. Again, so sorry. :(

Thanks for your input. I am contemplating culling all three....

I got seven chicks from TSC last year (and I don't have any of them now, last year was a bad year). Anyhow, one was a silver sebright. It looked ok initially, but developed a severe crossbeak...I don't know how that happens? At about 8-9 weeks it quit eating/drinking and became real weak. We had to put it out of its misery.

I slightly assisted one. Thanks for hugs. I'm just so disappointed---out of 12 eggs, 8 made it to lockdown. Of those 8, 2 didn't hatch, 3 were deformed and none of the ones that made it were the Orps I got to surprise my hubby with. I didn't tell him what they were until they started hatching, then all of "his" chicks turn out like this. So disgusted....!

Gentry, I had a chick with a messed up foot, it got better on its own by week 2, cross bills get worse, plus they cannot clean themselves. I am sorry..
