January 2016 Hatch-Come Join Me

Hello Hatch-a-long!

I'm expecting my eggs to hatch this weekend. The waiting is almost over!
I have mystery breed eggs with colors ranging from light to medium brown. I've culled 5 out of 30 which doesn't seem too bad considering they were meant for eating. This year the incubator is a glass reptile tank with a PID temperature controller

3 pm today was 24 hours. I have 4 thermometers inside my incubator. I have 2 Farm Innovations a 4200 and a 4250. I have the 2 internal thermometers that came with them. I also have two fishtank glass thermometers. 3 out of the 4 thermometers are reading 97 degrees and the other 100 degrees which matches the digital display on the 4250. I decided that I must increase the bator heat to 102 and going to check it again in an hour to see what the 3 thermometers show. The 4200 incubator ran hotter than indicated before and I guess the 4250 is cooler than indicated. I don't want to screw up my first run this year like the last 2 years. I have the RH at 54%

In my experience, humidity is more of an issue than temperature. How are you determining your RH? Cheap hygrometer's are just as unreliable as cheap thermometers. Anyway, remember, RH changes as temperature changes.

Soylent, where did your mystery eggs come from? Mine are light to medium brown too, but they're my own cross. I think its a really cool idea to use a PID. I never even considered using the PID I use to run my smoker, but its perfect for the job. BTW, congrats on getting so many to lock down.

Locking down tonight... ITS THE FINAL COUNTDOOOWN!

I envy you...;-] Lockdown is so cool...listening for the first peeps...best of luck!

Lock down for me is friday cant wait hoping power outage didnt hurt anything checked a few eggs seemed ok but far enough along cant see much but did see veins seemed healthy fingers crossed

Ok! First ever hatch in an old Little Giant 5200 still air bator. 36 eggs, with 2 ending up not being fertile and one early quitter after week 1. EVERY OTHER EGG IS MAKING IT TO LOCKDOWN! All have movement and looking good. 33 eggs, can't wait to see if hatch is as successful as the rest of the process has been.

I have 10 silkie eggs that went into lockdown last night. I candled my 8 day eggs and found 6 infertile, so 18 left in the 'bator. Let the hatching begin!! I can't wait to see pictures of all the babies.

I've got my incubator set at 104.5 to get the thermometers close to 100. I took the thermometer out that was reading much higher and put it over my digital house thermostat to check it compared to it. It was 4 degrees higher than the house. I pulled the thermometer do inside the cardboard which the markings are on to match it and put it back in the incubator. I'm having a hard time believing I should have the inubator set so hot and also that 3 out of 4 thermomters were together and the one that wasn't was not matching the house thermostat I adjusted and now all 4 show the same. Anyone have a Farm Innovators 4250 that is that far out of calibration. The digital display is now showing 46% after opening it to put the thermometer back in.

End of day 14 here. I candled the 4 I have left and they are all doing great. Movement, and wiggling, veins in the right place and nice air sacks. Lock down is Friday night.
