January 2016 Hatch-Come Join Me

Well, day 11 here, and I just candled all of the eggs for the first time. My Brinsea Ovascope has proven frustrating again, as it doesn't do a very good job on brown eggs. It may also be that my egg shells are a tad thicker, not sure if it has to do with all the eggs being from pullets. Of the 96, I am pretty sure 12 are clear. I've left them in just in case.

My hatches last year, with 3 year old hens and pullets (1/2 and 1/2) yielded me 75% fertility rates. Now, with all 3 of my males mature, I'm at 87.5% fertility...which is closer to what I hoped for.

Weight loss was slowing down so I dropped the RH to 46%. If the weight loss stays reasonably constant, this will get me my ideal weight loss by lockdown.

One thing I have noticed with the Brinsea Automatic Humidity Pump. When you open the door, causing the humidity to drop, the pump kicks in. In my case, additional water isn't required. When I close the door and humidity recovery occurs, the RH ends up being 52%+, despite having the pump set to provide 46%. IOWs, the pump sends more water than is needed. So from now on I am going to disconnect power to the pump when I open the door, and plug it back in 1 hour after I close the door.

Let's see some pictures of your new peeps please...;-]

Day 19. Just took out the turner and candled one last time.
Out of the original 41 eggs, 38 were fertile.
I do not have a strong enough light to really see inside, but all 38 have decent sized air cells, but one seems to have a clear spot at the bottom as well.

Can't wait to see what happens over the next couple days!

Well my hatch is over. Total of 32 out out 37 that went into lick down.

11 of the eggs that went into lockdown were my own Naked Neck eggs, a total of 9 of those hatched. Looks like there were 1 from my white hen, 3 from the Blue Red hen, 1 from my Black hen and 4 from the 1/2 EE hens ( they laid brown eggs).

Congrats! Can't believe they have little tiny naked necks at hatch.

Here's my beautiful babies. 28 came out of the 29 eggs that went into lockdown. I'm pretty sure the last egg quit but I can't tell.
