January 2016 Hatch-Come Join Me

I have no acurete way to weight them but thank you for that information. I might invest in a scale.

I have 2 scales, a Jeweler's scale I bought for like $20 on ebay which I use to weigh individual eggs (is accurate to 0.01g) and a kitchen scale from Salter, which is accurate to 1g, which I use for weighing entire trays of eggs (48 at a time, the scale goes up to about 4Kg), which I bought via Air Miles. I also use the jeweler's scale for grading.

A digital bathroom scale would be good enough if you can make it give you readings in grams. They may or may not be your native measure, but if the scale will report in grams its a much finer value than ounces.

FWIW, I set 96 eggs weighing a little more than 6Kg at setting time. My desired weight loss is ~50g/day, so you need a scale that can be accurate with small amounts.

BTW, an average egg is ~60g.

Great idea!!! I have a bathroom scale I can use. Thanks so much for the idea.

Look at a gun store that carries reloading supplies. You could get a gun powder scale that measures in grains and grams. It will measure up to 1,000 grains also accurate to .1 grain. They have to be really sensative so someone doesn't blow up their gun with their reloads.

Here I am, 4 hours into Day 21. At noon today (the beginning of day 21), I had no visible pips and no noises. Although I am only supposed to open the door every 6 hours, I said to heck with that and just check. Since all my eggs are from pullets (the oldest are 36 weeks, the youngest are 23 weeks), I've been getting worried that none would be viable.

Well, I have 1 visible pip, and I can hear several chirping. I still have no idea how many of the 89 that went into lockdown are going to hatch, but at least I know I am not going to be blanked...

My concern that I may not get any to hatch has turned into glee at the thought they may all hatch at roughly the same time...!!

Good luck. If your hearing them that's a great sign. Keep in mind that the day you set them does not factor into your 21 day count. You might be right on time! If you are worried about humidity by any chance grab a mist bottle and ABOVE not on your eggs spray a few mists every few hours. It's how I got my last try to hatch out. 3 were stuck but miraculously I was able to save all 3 using a tiny eye dropper, cue tip and a pair of tweezers. Took hours mind you and 3 days of gentle washing to remove all the stuck egg off but don't think because your humidity was off you can't save them anyway if that's your worry.

I have been struggling with that all this hatch. 24 hours after I set them is day 1, to me, so they had been set for 20 days at noon today, which meant day 21 began.

I have only used humidity as a guide to weight loss, and as of noon today, the 89 eggs had lost within 1g of the ideal weight loss, so I'm not concerned with humidity at all. Its running at 65%, so I know they aren't likely going to get shrink wrapped.

Good luck both of you. I'm making a video diary with my 8yr old daughter of this hatch for her class. Very fun watching her learn during this... I thought she was going to bounce out of the room when we candled and she saw shadows moving on day 5

With the humidity gauge acting up I wanted to show her the air sack.

5 more days to get those chicks hatched for this thread. Trying to keep it open though for those who want to come back and post pictures of their chicks and even some as they grow and mature.
