January 2023 Hatch-a-long

the last 2 hatched early this morning. 12 made it to lock down and 12 hatched. I added some a few days after as well.

Yes! The incubator cord has been found and eggs will be set tomorrow -- to hatch on the 29th.

That is fun. I have some eggs coming by the 20th or so. I like to watch the eggs for sale on the web site. Some of the breeds I have ordered have run out. I am also holding my breath on a rooster I just got.

I just stuffed 28 eggs into my Nurture Right 360 -- because I'm expecting some clears due to having only 1 rooster over ~21 hens and because I've only been getting about 60-70% hatches.

Having done this, I'll probably have more chicks than I expected, but I'll manage.

I just set 13 red BC eggs on my incubator. I believe I may get one more egg laid later today, in which case i’ll put it on as well for a total of 14 eggs. This is more than I usually do in one hatch, but it should be okay. Set the timer to 21 days, yay for bantam chicks!

I had a EE rooster that would breed all the different kinds of hens that I had. I saw it with my own 2 eyes. I never hatched a chick from him that wasn’t from a EE hen. I eventually quit trying. It was a waste of time and incubator space. They were clear eggs, not quitters.

I'm uncertain if he's maintaining good fertility with so many girls to cover -- that's why I'm raising up one of his sons to be his assistant.

Funny. I think 21 hens could still get fertilized, but he would still have his favorites.

Speaking of favorites, I once had a hen who was the top chicken hen, and a male duck. He never bred the top hen but would follow her around and talk to her, he would breed other chicken hens but not her.

He probably *could*, I just don't know if he *does* -- especially since it's winter.

I tried that too. The assistant was a little too aggressive and had to go.
