Sorry about the power outage - that's a COMPLETE bummer!!!!My of 3 Fri. hatch eggs, I have one zipping. A power outage didn't help right before a hatch, pics soon.
Day 8 on my other eggs.
Could be a few different reasons. Shipped eggs will often have high air sacs, sometimes on both sides. That's called saddle air sac. I often find that they either don't make it during lockdown, or, if they pip, can't turn..no room...so I assist the hatch. Another reason is, for small eggs with, such as, silkies with high vaults often have a hard time turning. Another reason, a huge chick is in that large, but...very narrow egg. I unfortunately have a very pretty blue egg, that is doing well for now, but, has a very high air cell on one side, and, the egg is one of those long narrow eggs. Sometimes, with all of these situations they surprise you! Sometimes they will hatch just fine, and even hatch at the wrong end. Not often, but once in a while. Always a pleasant surprise. What would cause a malpositioned chick?
Good job on assisting! Wow, that's a lot that weren't able to turn. You mentioned anther reason why they don't make it .. after pipping.. hitting a big blood vessel ..they drown. Man, that upsets me to find some that had pipped, but didn't make it. Sorry.Hatch complete! I hatched 19 out of 22 eggs for an 86% hatch rate! I performed an assisted hatch for my last egg and I think he's going to be fine. Drying off in the incubator now. I performed eggtopsies on the other eggs, two had external pips. The we're malpositioned and piped at the wrong end and in those cases piped into a blood vessel causing them to die. The third did not pip but was also malpositioned and dead upon opening. After looking at egg shells I realized that two other chicks were malpositioned but hatched successfully. So 26% we're malpositioned! I wonder why that is? Some of these eggs were probably at least 10 days old since this was an emergency hatching situation. Maybe that's why? I'll post pics once everyone is fluffy and dry! Thanks for staying tuned!
What is dry hatchingI like dry hatching. For those of you not seeing anything on day 5 of candling, you will be surprised at how often you will see something by day 7. I've found waiting until day 9 or 10 now because of past surprises.![]()
