Hello,
I candled my eggs and all looked good, but 2 are maybes. I'm not taking out any till they smell. Being this is my first time. I also have a broody with two eggs. I candled them tonight to see how far along they are. (do to I lost the info.on them) The first one did not look good. That is when I noticed the slight smell. The other one looked better and no smell. I cracked open the bad one. It had a head and body (small) what looked to be the eye not sure. It was a blk. spot around where the eye would be. That was it. No other growth. Today is the first time I smelled anything, but looked like it died early.? Does anyone know if I'm right or far along it was? So now I have 15 BLR LF eggs 2 maybes out of them. 1 Cockoo Maran egg of my own in bator. Also 1 CM under the broody.

I hope the rest do better and hatch for me.

Well, little 'Lucky' the double-broken egg didn't make it. I candled last night and it didn't appear to be doing much, along with one other, so I broke them open and don't think either was fertile. I've got fourteen definitely developing though, as of day ten. Not bad I guess, out of 24 eggs that were 2+ weeks old.

My serama hen is really into mothering her two chicks now and started neglecting the eggs, so I took the four remaining eggs and put them in the incubator. They were kind of lukewarm, I'm hoping the lower temps after the hen ditched them didn't kill them. I candled them and they still seem to be alive, but no guarantees. I'm hoping, though!

I'd love another chick or two or three or four! I'll take whatever I can get. They're in lock-down because they looked to be at a point of development where it's hatching time (I don't know what dates she started laying on them!), so we'll see what happens. I'll give them at least a week of lock-down just in case!

Come on, I want more chicks!

Next hatch, I'm definitely setting everything at the same time. It's been so confusing between the broody having different age eggs, switching between incubator and broody, trying to guess hatching times, and so on.

Next time, it'll be a simpler hatch!

Well the chicksicles are still rolling along, now at 13 days, so soon.... and I've been stuffing a few from my other hens in the bator, because I have a blue hen and want more so I keep collecting then incubating her eggs. They should all hatch in time to run with the mama seramas' little collection of whatevers. Kind of neat when a rough start goes smoothly. I'm just hoping for outdoor temps above the twenties for awhile. Wow what a nasty freeze and wet... Luck to all the peepers and Rockers this week!

Someone quite randomly proposed to give me two eggs so I could have a hand at incubating them (woot!). I know, only two. Well...one is a leghorn, 95% sure, and the other appears to be a Rhode Island Red if I identified her hens correctly. Candled both and everything seems in place, so...we'll see what happens, lol.

This is day 21 for me. And I have one Pipping!! I can see the little chick moving around in the egg! This is so cool. (First time incubating)
But I really hope another one hatches too. That would be awesome. How long does it usually take them to get out after pipping?

I've heard it can take all day... or just a few minutes. My one chick that I hatched a few weeks ago (the one in my avatar, Holly) pipped around 9am and was fully hatched around 4pm.

Wow, lots going on out there with new setting, candling & hatches. How fun! Congradulations! Good luck to you all!

I just candled Sat. for day 10 & have 7 that look good. Interestingly, at day 7 it looked more like 5 that were good with dark mass & a few others that did not look as developed, but saw 1 moving; there's a lot of change in those few days. Others have candled a batch of eggs & seen some more advanced than others around day 7 or less. Now, I don't toss until day 14 as a rule. My flashlight is not super high powered (just a small 9 Led), so I rely on seeing dark mass (even if I can't see movement) & it has been most reliable for me. Can hardly wait for the 27th of Jan. for hatch.

May I say it again regarding candling & "seeing blood rings." Always, just hang in there & don't freak out about the "blood ring monster" thing, as it will smell bad to warn you when it must be tossed. On day 10 candle & look for dark mass in the middle, air cell on the left/top/wide end, & clear egg white on the right/bottom/pointed end. Unless it smells or weeps, don't toss or crack open, just wait as long as you can even til day 14 or 18 before "lockdown." We loose viable eggs by easily thinking we see the wrong things. I've been there too, it's a hard lesson; kick yourself once & then learn from it. So be patient, learn by what we see, watch for developement changes on the candling days, take notes, research for answers, & do it better next time.

Also, my last hatch of chickies took 20 hrs. from the 1st pip to the last hatch; I stayed out of there & it all went smooth. I've heard say it took a total of 30 hrs. Don't be hasty to jump in & try to help the chick out of the egg. By opening the incubator, it drops the valuable humidity dramatically for the rest of the eggs & makes the pipped egg dry so the chick gets stuck. I've learned my lesson & don't open the bator anymore. I now bow to Nature & it's amazing feats.

My quail eggs were due yesterday (17th), but didn't show a sign until this morning. The one that was pipped at 7:30AM is still just peeking out of it's hole, and there were two more pips this morning, but nobody's zipping yet.
While I know the best thing for me to do is leave them be, it's a fight against nature. I want to help, even though I know it would do them harm.
I've kept my hands out of there for this long... but it's KILLING me.
I want my quail babies so bad!!!
Ahhh, such is life. There's nothing I can do.
