january hatch-a-long

Pics
I checked the egg that I'm sure has bubbles down the side. I can't get a picture of it, but I've marked it to check again at day 10 or so. I only have my cellphone to light them up tonight. It's hard to get a good look inside some.

I have two that I'm nearly positive are alive, though! The only thing is both of them are forming at the top of the fat end of the egg. Is that normal? I've had them the right way up, except for a few I found that are *very* hard to tell. I'm pretty sure they're all right now, though.

I was so upset about my first hatch. After those hatched one of my cats knocked into the incubator enough for the lit to be ever so slightly off dropping the humidity. We lost all eggs after those first 6. 3 of those 6 ended up getting sick and dying They would develop a boil of some sort then quickly fade away. They all had the same dad so I'm leaning towards genetics. My second hatch is set for 02/02 though. Hoping it goes much better. Also, no animals allowed in our room until hatch is over.

Yikes! When itsi near lockdown time with my eggs I intend to tape the water shut (in an easy and quick to remove way) so my fur friends don't get into it. Rue is very excited about the whole process. She sits with the eggs all the time. She either really wants to be a a mama, or is waiting for dinner. (Or possibly it's warm and she's a snuggle bug)

Currently the eggs are on my floor. I'm shampooing so I had to move everything around.

I got a stomach bug and couldn't help the quail chick out until now. I helped the chick but it had been in the egg to long it's neck was stiff and it couldn't move. The little quail died shortly after I put it in the brooder to drie.

:hugs

chicks are at 4-5 days old now....at 14 total of the 18 that hatched. yesterday I was having problems getting an accurate head count and I found my missing one this morning as I did a complete cleaning on the brooder. It had crawled up under the heating pad and didn’t get out. I tried to cover the sides better to make sure this doesn’t happen again. one of these days I’ll figure out a quail-proof system! I’m thinking of getting a brooder plate and puppy pads for the first couple of weeks.

I see no reason why just putting the heating pad flat on the ground covered with a few layers of paper towels wouldn't work for you. It works for me. I don't cover but about two inches of the floor... Drape the heating pad over the side.
