When you candle on Day 18 you may see some movement but not always. Those chicks are crammed in there so tight that there is very little to see except for the darkness. Here is a great site that shows you what is actually going on inside the eggs During Days 1-21.Quick question...my first hatch just went into lockdown today (day 18). I candled on Tuesday night and all I could see was a large black mass in each egg with the air pocket at one end. Earlier, I could see heartbeats and detect movement, but I couldn't see anything inside of eggs on Wednesday. Should I be seeing something or is this normal?
I did find this image of the stages and that pretty much looks like what my eggs looked like, but I just thought I would be able to detect some signs of life in there...(I'm not known for my patience lol)

Yep - that's pretty much what I saw! Ok, I'll try to be patient. LOLWhen you candle on Day 18 you may see some movement but not always. Here is a pic of what you probably saw and it is perfectly normal:

If you candled from the bottom then yes you will see that. Good for you for not wanting to touch the eggs. I was touchy, feely for the first few hatches and as time went on I only candle on days 10 and 18. I do like to take them out and give the eggs a good once over. Sometimes you may find a crack or leaky egg that you missed when they were set.Brooks I'm on day 10 with them. I did read something her on BYC that says is you candle from the bottom (pointed) end of the egg that it looks like mine are looking now. I am wondering if that is it- the eggs I was incubating last month I candeled from the side because that was how they laid in the bator & I didn't want to disturb them too much. I am using a different bator with these and they sit upright- which is why I candle from the bottom.![]()

And OMG I'm so excited I can nearly stand myself today! My SFH chicks, 10 of them- arrived at the PO this morning. I have wanted these since I found out about the breed. In fact that is the 1st eggs I tried hatching- I only got 6, and sadly none made it! I was so upset, then on rare breed auction I found these 10 chicks & won the bid. They are all crested, which I LOVE! I was amazed at how beautiful they all are- pics do not do this breed justice. When I opened the box this morning my husband, mother in-law and I all just said OOOOHHHHHHHHHH! @ the same timeBoth my husband & mother in-law are from Sweden, which is why I became interested in the Isbars & SFH to begin with. I can't wait to see what sex they each are & how they look when grown. The man sent me a truely beautiful mix of colors & patterns!![]()
Of course you say you will not touch them for 7 days. lol Hello!Hi! Just set my very first eggs this morning! 14 Silkies. Shipped eggs. PA to CA! Packed well...arrived intact. I let them sit for 19 hours big end up. Of the 14 at least 5 had funky air cells. Now they are all in the bator.... big end up and I am NOT going to turn or touch them for 7 days!So far so good?![]()
