Hi, Terry. I don't hesitate to let everyone know that Paul Kroll hatched and raised that bird and was kind enough to sell her to me to help me get started in Japanese. Thanks for dropping by!

I hate to do this because, 1. I don't raise grays, 2. Ihave only had Japanese for a couple of years, 3. Pictures aren't the same has looking, hancling the bird. etc., etc. I guess you get my point. I can't tell alot about their legs, I wil assume you know a short leg bird. Comb on the male should have five points. The more points, the more deducted..It is common to see up to 7 points in a show, maybe more. The lacing in the breast of your guys is what I think is called "mossy" It should be a black feather with a silvery white lacing. Now as to how much of that mossiness is acceptable in reality, I don't know. That is something you would need to talk to a breeder of the grays, or a judge. I hope I have helped, sorry I can't be of more help, but like I say, I am fairly new at this myself. Now, if we could get someone like Terry to drop in a little more often, lol.......

ETA: Terry Wible is the author of The Japanese Bantam, a book i would recommend to anyone who is interested in raising or showing Japanese, even if only for pleasure. I need to go read it again myself......

You are very kind to promote my book. It's simply a collection of what I learned from other more mature experienced breeders like Paul Kroll. He is great asset to the Japanese Breed. I wish you well with your venture and thanks for being honest about the origin of the bird.

Hi guys!

I have some questions about Japanese Bantams, I am thinking of getting them because of some reasons.

I have a small coop and run. I think these birds are the size I am met to have.

I originally thought I wanted wynadottes because of their egg laying ability...but now I think the breed will be too big for my backyard/set up.

I was wondering how big the eggs are really. Does anyone have a picture to compare to a "normal" egg.

I also hear they are a calm bird, but then I go on some websites and they say they are "flighty"

How much does your hens weigh on average?

I rather get information from "real people" and not websites that dont have uniform information...

Thank you!

Im such a nooblet!

Hello Silver Laced Mom,

Japanese bantams can be flighty if they are not handled, but if you handle them from chcik up, they are very friendly. Unfortunately japanese hens only lay about 50 eggs a year because they are very good mothers they want to hatch after they lay a dozen or few eggs. Afull grown hen weighs about 22 ounces.
I hope this helps.
Terry
