I may be buying 2 Japanese bantams tomorrow and I want to know a little info on them.

Are they good pets?

What size eggs do they lay and what color?

Are they known for broodiness?

Are they good egg layers?

Plz post pictures of your Japs and their eggs.

Thanks everyone!

I recently got my first ones ever. They were never handeled, but they can't fly and they can't run very fast, so I would guess they would make great pets as they can't get away very easily.

I hatched out 6 very small off white eggs also and the chicks are so sweet and not flighty at all.

Here are mine:

I have 2 of these little guys. They are kind of ugly, but I think they will get cuter eventually. They are barred Japs

I think so. Maybe not as tiny chicks, but the roos get a huge comb and the hens don't. So you could go by that I guess. I have not had them long enough to know. I do think the 2 all barred young ones I got are both pullets. Thay are not showing any sign of a comb yet.

are they pricey? I mean to find a good quality what did you have to pay?

I'll be doing some trading a pair of white silkies and a partidge and white 12 wk chicks for some.

LOL,

I just wanted to make sure I was not paying too much.
I'm not looking for show quality I don't have the time for that but nice pet/breeder quality.

We love our Jap bantams ! They are very broody. One of our hens made a nest in a flower pot on the front porch and another in a large metal milk can ! Excellent mothers. They lay a small brown egg and from my experience it is pretty much daily. You will love them!
