Hi everyone! I plan to get some Japanese quails to keep in my backyard, but just for fun/as pets, I don't plan to keep them for their eggs, meat, etc. For now I plan to get only 4 (1 male and 3 females). I am pretty sure many of these questions have been asked before on this forum, but there are so many threads, I thought if I asked like this, it would save me a lot of time. Keep in mind that I want them to live happy lives, and I want them to be healthy and comfortable.
- I plan to keep them outside in a pen. The weather here is very cold in winter (sometimes it can get below 20 degrees Celsius in January) and very hot in summer (over 36 degrees Celsius in July and August). In the pen I plan to build a small shelter for them in case they need to keep warm in winter, and a part of the pen will be under constant shade, in case they need shelter from the sun. Would that be enough, or?
- Since quails can fly, I want them to have enough room for that. What dimensions would be ideal for 4 birds (how high, how wide and how long should the pen be)?
- In what kind of bowl should I give them water? I have heard that they might drown in bowls, so what alternatives are there?
At the moment these are the only questions I have. I hope you can answer these for now. Thanks!
P. S. Sorry for any language and grammar mistakes, English isn't my first language.
