I have had several hatches early, marans, and PBRs and the RIWs all hatched 2 days early.
My thermo is not too warm either...it just happens when eggs are very fresh and the little birdies are healthy and strong!
So cool ! Good Luck.. I have lockdown on the 9th, and pips on the 15th for the first shipment, I am very excited !!!!!!!!!!

I will take lots of photos so you can see !
And if you have photos please post: Black Javas are the cutest of all chicks, followed by Blue Marans babies...little blue fluffies...

it is true that the one i have already hatched was collected on the day i set eggs, so it was VERY fresh, but i one close to zipping that was collected 6 days before and was (gasp!) refrigerated for a few days. i didn't decide until the 11th or so to hatch some out, so i scrounged around and got a few out of the eating carton from the week before that...we shall see how the y do! lol, it cracks me up to think about it, but i have done it before with good success.

i hope you do GREAT. of course all your eggs were fresh and kept in the cool part of the building, not the fridge.

i was just coming to post pics!

i opened up the remaining un hatched eggs today, day 23. i think they did get too cool one night during lockdown (our first freezing temps night, and i didn't add aluinum foil around the aquarium as i had meant to before falling asleep, to keep the heat in.

i set 12 eggs, 11 black javas, one olive egger. went into lockdown with 10 BJs. the OE was infertile. 6 of 10 BJs did hatch and are looking so great!

by the way chickielady, i had 3 from maeve and 3 from moxie hatch. i had set six from maeve and five from moxie.

oh and my vote for the cutest...

I candles a few a week ago, and all looked OK, I will leave them alone.
I always crack bump or drop them when I candle, I would just rather not as the shells get so fragile before hatches...so exciting !

i hope you have great luck. my first hatch ever (last hatch) i got 14 chicks out of 15 javas that went into lockdown. i was sad about the low ratio this time....but at least i know WHY this hatch was so much worse than last.

i know everyone thinks their birds/breed/whatever are extra hardy/healthy, but i honestly do think the black javas (maybe other javas, can only speak to BJs) are truly an amazingly healthy breed. everyone i heard back from that i have sent eggs to has had very good results, esp. for shipped eggs. people talk about hybrid vigor and how strong "mutts" are, but my vote is with BJs for survivability and lack of health problems!

My 7 month old Java hen has gone broody for the first time. After a week of removing her eggs, we've decided to let her give it a go. We moved her into a broody box and gave her six java eggs to hatch. So far she's very determined. Hatching chicks in MN in November will certainly test her motherhood abilities as well as the rigor of these chicks.

I just discovered this breed, and I think I'm in love. I actually live pretty close to Garfield Farm, and I understand they do sell chicks when they have them.

For those of you who keep them, do you find them to be friendly/gentle? I have a toddler, so that is an important characteristic. Are they cold hardy? I'm assuming they are since Garfield Farm raises them (they and I are in Northern Illinois).

Also, do folks think it is valuable to keep the rare heritage breeds if you are *not* breeding? I cannot have roosters, so I would not be breeding, just keeping hens for eggs mostly. (I know the chicks from Garfield are straight run only)
