I don't think there's any rhyme or reason to when pullets actually start laying. My first batch of chicks all started laying within a week of each other at about 4 months old. The next set of 3 (hatched in early May) didn't start laying until around Christmas and one of them (Blue Wyandotte) didn't start until she was 10 months old! My most recent girls have started laying at about 5 months. You'll know the time is near when their comb turns bright red and they squat submissively when you approach or reach down on their back.
