Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Ok, finally finished reading through this whole thread. Took forever, like a week. I have a question. I have 2 black jersey giant chicks around 10 wks. They are pet quality came from someone that lives near me as eggs for my broody. He was positive that the eggs came from a giant hen and he only had giant roos so they should be full giant. They have black legs, yellow on bottom of feet. Will post pics later. My chickens roost high therefore there mommy tought them to roost high like in the rafters. Well mommy recently decided she was done with them as did the rest of the flock so the 2 of them were outcast from the roost. They still wanted to roost high, I know that it isn't good for them but they were not satisfied with 2ft roosts I tried. So I built them a nice shelf about 6 ft up and created a ladder like contraption to hop up and down as they can't fly that high. They use it and it isn't the only thing that they can use to get down. I never see them come down but they definitely use the ladder/steps going up. Should this be ok? I cannot remove all high roosting spots, I would have a mutiny. I wish I had known about the height issues before I let there mommy teach them to roost high but I didn't.

Here are some older pics:

Oh yeah and thats them in my avatar

Let them roost where they want.Just as long as the have the option of useing a ladder. When they get to big to jump down they will use the ladders. They are pretty smart. I have roost at 2ft,4ft, and a shelf at 5ft and I still have to take them off the top of the door at night. The only time they use the 2ft is when they are waiting to be let out in the morning. It is just thier nature to perch as high as possible.

okay, so I have JG's, but have questions...hoping someone/someones can help...how old are JG's when they start to lay? are they older than other chickens? how old before the roo becomes sexually mature? i am having lots of non fertile eggs from the roo i currently have in with the hens and have another that is a blue and approx 5 months old...any recommendations?

JAPJR - give them time! I have Jerseys from three different breed lines, and they all seem to mature at different rates. But, 24 weeks is the average for all large fowl birds...mine begin anywhere from 24 - 28 weeks typically. It's worth the wait! They lay some honkin' huge eggs, eventually!

I just wanted to post up a couple of pics of my 9 week old JG's I got from Kathyinmo several weeks ago. They are not very cooperative for a photo shoot, so I don't have any great ones. The first one is of all 3, Splash pullet, Black pullet and Blue cockerel enjoying a small bit of scratch.

This one is Gus, my blue cockerel. We had a little health issue last week when he began developing some balance and/or paralysis issues. I thought I was gonna have to cull him, but found a thread on intense vitamin B therapy and it worked to bring him back. I am glad, he's a real looker!
