Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

And on that note... My biggest fluffiest blue Jersey hen is having trouble with the high humidity and 85 degree weather snap. She is panting super hard. They love the cold, and don't mind rain or snow, but are hating the heat!

I am SO glad you are doing better Wynette!! I dislike taking meds too but sometimes...it is the only way we get better!! Back injury, cool spring, hens not laying....enough to make ANYONE of us crabby!!!
Looking forward to seeing the pictures of the newest additions and I am at day 5 with your girls eggs! Glad I got some prior to the one going broody....and good to know that your line DOES go broody. Have you ever let one hatch out her own chicks??

Jersey Giants will probably never be a super popular breed; I think they just simply take up more room than other large fowl. But I can never visualize my life without some Jerseys! I adore them, their laid back nature, the beautiful, deep crow of the roosters, and those huge eggs are pretty awesome, too!

Thanks so much! Yes, it's just shocking to me how much better I am feeling! Still...each time I twist around, I sort of tighten my stomach & back muscles, waiting for the shooting pain...but it has not come back! I am thrilled!!

My one gal that went broody broke herself. With a bit of help from me! I kept taking her out of the nest box and plopping her down into the run, where she would promptly sit down, fluff up, and make those broody cackling noises they make. I have doors that I can close on my nest boxes, so when the other gal laid for the day, I closed them off for the broody splash gal. This morning, she went out into the yard with the rest, and was still out there when I checked an hour later, so here's hoping!

The good thing is that she never was super nasty like some broodies can get. She allowed me to pick her up without pecking at me...just a bit of grumbling! This is her first time going broody, and all my growout pens are full, so I've no room for any babies for awhile, so no, I didn't let her hatch.

I have one gone broody this past week. Just when I need every egg I can get for this friday. I decided to let her keep four. Like I said I need ever egg I can get so every new egg I take. The problem I have is I marked the ones she keeps with an X on both end in pencil. It is hard to see so sometimes and I grab the old eggs by mistake. Is there a better way to mark them so I don`t have to disturb them.

Tinman, I use sharpie markers on my Marans eggs because they're so dark - it's the only thing I have found to mark them with that shows up. Maybe use one of those?

Just a quick question about hatching JGs... My first hatch went off great. All the eggs that I candled as "live" came out as chicks, at exactly the 21 day mark. But this time, we candled 4 extra that didn't hatch, and those that did hatch hatched a day early (two even pipped 2 days early). We could see the 4 other eggs rocking around, so I left them in the incubator for 4 extra days beyond the time when the others hatched, yet no banana. Any ideas what could have caused this? How long does it usually take everyone's Jerseys to hatch? I've looked all over the internet and gotten responses that it takes as long as 28 days. I didn't leave them in there a full 28 days, but they had stopped rocking, too, and there was no more peeping, etc. I guess my question is how long does it take Jersey Giants to hatch, on community average?

My JG's are "sweet" broodies. I like that because I can get closer to the chicks without them freaking out. I've got 3 Sandhill giants that are broody right now. Two with chicks and one just starting to set.

Gosh, I never thought about "nasty" versus "sweet" broodies being a breed characteristic, Dale-Ann! You MAY be onto something since your JGs are a different bloodline than mine! I'd love to hear from folks who have had JGs go broody - have you noticed them being nasty or sweet?

Okay, peeps! I posted a poll on this! https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=501874

- you just never know what will happen in hatches. THe fact that those that hatched went early would make me think your temps were just a hair too high. Even if it's a digital reader, your bator can show off readings, or the ambiant/outside temp/humidity/altitude can change readings as well.

However, in the end, ANY time you get more than 50% to hatch from shipped eggs, you're doing well!

I have 9 JG Black chicks hatched March 23 and March 26 that have developed a white spot on the end of the wing feather by the tail feathers. We got these JG for my 12yr to show. so any white on a black bird is a Major NO NO. I'm thinking maybe when I moved them out to the in closed barn after 4wks in the house. The heat lamp got to hot and damaged the end of the feather? I have posted this on the chick page and every one said to give the chicks until July 1 to make a decision.
