Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Thanks for the reply. I have 16 females all less than a year but, all laying now. I have 2 cockerals, the one in the flock(bantam cohcin/standard ee) and my jersey giant. I am planning on moving my jg into the coop in a dog crate with the others within the week. How long should I keep him in there? Should I let him out with the others when I can supervise or should I keep him in for a certain amount of time to let him gain confidence without anybody being able to get to him?

Just got the last part of your post figured out in my pea brain so I wanted to post again. Are you saying I should remove the alpha male for awhile? Will this help my jg gain a little dominance? What if the jg can still hear the other crow? Will it effect his ability to dominate? If this is what you are recommending, should I remove the dominant male as soon as I put the jg out in the coop in a seperate cage or should I wait for a couple of weeks until I am ready to let the jg into the flock?

Hi all. I am thinking about breeding my JG chickens. I have 2 roos one is little and not as pritty but calm, the other big and vary pritty but mean! So whitch one would you all breed? I am breeding them for a friend for eggs and meat. Thank you,

Chicken Girl

I would remove the dominant roo, and see how the JGiant will do with the girls. They may pick on him awhile, but they should adapt. Keeping the other roo out will allow the JGiant to be alpha. Just watch them and see how it goes .... play it by ear.

I am certainly no expert but if if it were me, I would breed them both and keep the small nice ones for eggs and the big mean ones for meat.

Thanks! I never thought of removing the dominant until I posted, and now I am so excited to be able to believe I could find a way in for my jg. Still I wonder if I should keep my jg locked up for awhile? If so, should I do the lock up with or without the dominant in the fold?

Hi all,
frow.gif

This is my first post but have been reading this forum for close to a year. I also have a flock of black JG's, 5 of 22 who were/are showing the copper feathers, although I've been calling it red. I had one boy that started showing red on the sides of his neck hackles (died from a dog attack) and another boy that is showing red on his wings, and then later on his neck hackles as well (Red Boy). I have three girls that have red throats, one more than the others who also has a little bit of brownish lacing on her wing feathers (Red Girl). When I say wing feathers, I don't mean the flight feathers, just the little ones on the meaty part of the wing.

Chickenshagg, like you, I was wondering how to go about breeding out a red jersey line as well. Do you still have your roo?????

Their dames and sire were all black but I think the off genes are being blamed on the sire but I don't think anyone knows. I think the dames all came from a hatchery. They are still alive, and will be able to acquire a few of them them in the fall when the rest of the flock head off to the freezer if I decide to line breed. The red girl with brown wing feathers was one of the first ones to lay and she is also the smallest in the flock of 15 girls and 7 boys. Other than the red boy, I kept a nice tempered black boy. Another thing, I have a large proportion of pink/white feet. These are large birds and they are about 7 mos old now, laying well.

I'd be interested in opinions on breeding for the red coloring or collaborating with others on the project.

Toodaloo!

MJ

I think that would be great fun! I love projects like that! Presently, I am working on a couple projects (Lavender Orps and Silkie feathered Ameraucanas), and I really wouldn't have room. BUT, I would love to tag along and watch others do a project like this!
