Well, heck, why not give it a try and see what ya get! I am not sure that would be passed on, but I would say if he has the size you want, then give it a try!

ETA: Or better yet .... come take one of my extra roos!

if i don't find one soon, i may get one from bobbi porto. sandhill has good cubalayas but have heard bad things about their giants. maria's are too expensive.

cubalaya Check with Bobbi Porto she has the nicest giants. I got all of mine from her an have won with them both times I have shown them. Some of them are just turning 1 years old most have won as cockerels and pullets. If you check her website under 2010 news you will see my now rooster Indy when he won both times. You cant go wrong with her birds. JMHO Micki

Micki,
When you show, is there alot of competition? I was told that there just isn't many Giants showing up at the shows. Is that true?

I started culling this week. Well, I already sold off ALL the SandHills Giants. I now have a cull pen. I kept my biggest Blue and biggest Black roosters. I love my Splash, but dumped him because his comb is not to my liking. I prefer the comb of my smaller Black, but opted for size and kept the larger Black. What is your opinion; should I keep the smaller black and hope he grows, or go with bigger black? I am not happy with any combs except the smaller black.

These are the culls:

What do you think? I do still have some others growing out, so I may get a good one from them.

No there are not alot of giants being shown right now There are several people here in Florida who have them so I am hoping they will attend the shows this year as most of theirs are young as well. At one point I thought we would have father and brother against my cockerel but the weather was too much that weekend and they couldnt attend. I have decided to continue to show them to create an interest. When we took them to the Newnan show I had several people take my card to get chicks. I am waiting now to fill an order from one man who called. I have also decided to start in with dark and light brahmas and salmon faverolles so that I can have better competition. I agree the young black has a great comb you might want to keep him and just breed him to larger hens. I have 3 hens and a young rooster from Sandhill who are very promising I know you had problems but the the 4 I got are very nice quality. Two of the hens are that dark almost black blue and the other is lighter They have yellow only on the bottom of their feet and a rather large for their ages. The hens are just starting to lay. I am hoping to breed the darker hens to my really large rooster Colbalt as he is lighter. Your splash looks pretty good as well I had to cull my favorite splash as he had a bad comb but I still have one that wont be 1 until July so we will see how he turns out. I guess all you can do is check with the SOP and see if you can get an idea of the perfect comb. Micki

Well, these guys are just about 7 months old. Do you think I should keep Little Black, since he has such a nice comb? Do you think he may catch up and be as big as the 2 biggest? Is that possible?

Sure its possible. I gave my SIL an extra blue rooster that I thought would be a cull You should see him now hes huge and beautiful 7 months is alittle young with these big guys I would give him time You can always cull later if you need to.

Well, maybe I will just keep him then. I really do like his comb and his long back. The only reason I was gonna keep Big Black is because of his size. Now that I think about it, I wonder if Little Black was just pushed away from the feeder more, because he is low man on the totem pole. Maybe he will beef up a bit in the future.
