Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

So I am VERY interested in getting some Black Jersey Giants! I like how big and pretty they are but I have never had this breed. Are they pretty friendly and are they good egg layers?

Do some of the hatcheries cross the JG with Aussie?? Everyone talks about the JG needing to have yellow feet, do all of them have yellow feet or just most?? If the feet are not yellow does that mean its a cross or Aussie? I bought my first supposed JG from cackle hatchery (before I new better) and some of them don't have yellow feet but are a lot bigger than Aussies are supposed to be at a year old. One of my Roos is 14lbs and the other two are around 12, I have hens that are 10lbs. I culling this summer when I get my new chicks from another breeder and am trying to decide who goes and who stays. They are not for show just farm chickens and I sell eating eggs.

So I hope I don't jinx this but I have a broody Giant. This is day 4 on the nest with no outside time or coming off the nest for treats. Storeys has Giants as unsuccessful broodies, thank goodness she doesn't read and this is not the first time I saw wrong info in the book. So are Giants broody or is she going to walk away in a few days or next week? Are they good Moms? I have 37 eggs in the incubator just over 1 week and I would love to give her a couple of the eggs and slip in the rest as they hatch.

There are some that do not have the yellow feet, even in exhibition lines. Those birds should not be used for breeding, as this is a disqualification.

I've only ever had one Giant broody and she was fabulous - but, she has yet to go broody for me again, and she's now 4 yrs. old. Other than that, nope, nada for me on Giant broodies. There are exceptions to all the rules. Easter eggers are not supposed to be broody either, having been bred for egg laying. But - I have one that has been broody since late winter. The problem is she'll only set for a week or so, then come off the nest for about a week, then broody again...I haven't seen an egg from her in over a month now due to this nonsense.

I have a Jersey Giant that is broody. This is her second batch of eggs. She hatched 6 chicks the first time. She was still broody after they hatched so she is sitting on her second batch. Due this weekend.

If they are just for eating/selling eggs, I would worry not about the color of the feet. If you ever think you might show (Like me in 1-5 years) then cull out non-yellow feet.

Well I guess I will just wait and hope. I think I will wait longer before removing her eggs and replacing them with some from the incubator, I just fear if I disturb her she will get off the nest. I have an Orp that liked to go broody but stopped. She isn't laying and may have to go to Camp Freezer.
