Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

can you spend more time with her?
sad.png

Well, I work. So she sees me for 10 minutes in the morning while I tidy up the coop. And I spend about an hour w/ her in the evenings. Weekends I spend more time.

I made her squat for me yesterday morning and twice yesterday evening. Last night I actually locked them all inside their coop for the night which keeps it darker. (Their 4'x4' coop sits inside a 14' by 20' predator proof run so I don't need to lock them up.) And when I let them out, they all came out together. I think the crowing might have to do w/ her being lonely. And I made them some mash out of the powdered feed which they all ate together.

So I'll try that for a few more days/nights and see if I can get them to get along a little better. The babies are 18 weeks now and one has a really red face, wattles and comb. I'm hoping that as they come into lay and one or two are in a nest, that Coco can then figure out how to get along w/ the lone one out in the run and they can get along.

I really was just venting above. I was so very bummed with all the hardship I've had raising chickens. I'm so jealous when I speak to people who say, Yea, we got 4 hens three years ago and still have the same 4.

I'll work through this.

I lost a patient last Friday, she was 58 w/MR-ID. (I work in mental health)

Then Sunday night I lost my little Speckled Sussex (not crowed yet) cockerel suddenly to impaction

Then today my week & half old Blue Red Laced Wyandotte is so weak and empty. I've been nursing
him all morning. I'm soooooooooooooooooo depressed! I constantly battle the coccidiosis, and if
rooster picking was a sport i'd get the Gold!

Hi all, I'm hopping on this thread to learn as much as I can about Jersey Giants. My chick from Meyer was supposed to arrive today, but USPS has detained her

. I'm so sorry to hear of the recent losses...

I am new to BYC and read this thread with great interest. Sorry to read about chickens who went to poultry heaven, my husband befriends our flocks and it pains him to lose any. We raise giants and wyandottes here in nw ga. We give a quart of buttermilk to our flocks to help combat cocci.. since we do that we have not lost any chicks or chickens. Have a better day.

I am pretty sure I am right behind you with the silver! But I love the character of those guys I do!!
Just lost my roo (not for good I hope) to a corrupt city government (long story) and will fight to get him back!
Heartbroken too!
Hope things are going better for you!

Hi all, I received my Black Jersey Giant (supposed to be female) chick from Meyer Hatchery on Tuesday. The problem is, I also received a Black Orpington & Black Black Australorp. I'm having a really difficult time figuring out which chick is which breed (note to self: order mixed colors next time LOL). Can any of you give me your best guess? These pics were taken at 1 day old. Here is Chick #5. Her most distinguishing characteristics are that her beak is half pink, half black; split right down the middle & she also has really bold, well defined lines above & below her eyes:

Chick # 7's only distinguishing feature is a mostly black beak with a pink tip. For some reason her bum & tummy look mighty Orpish to me, like my Lavender & Blue Orpingtons looked at this age, so I'm leaning toward Black Orpington on this one:

I have come to affectionately refer to chick # 8 as Tank. She is the biggest of all 9 chicks I received. So maybe Black Jersey Giant?
