Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Drumroll.... here are my two black Jersey Giant pullets - three days old in the picture. They're the very first JG I've ever had - or seen in the flesh. They seem so tiny. Hard to believe they'll grow up to be solid black. And, well, giants.

One is named Esmerelda. Why, I don't know. It just happened.

I counted last evening. I have 16 lavenders (4 with splashes that are very noticable / 12 that are solids at this time) and 3 splashes with white feathering with splashes of medium and dark blue. So if you want a lavender rooster or two let me know. I haven't sexed them but there should be a few girls in the mix that I will keep.

I am noticing that some have white/pink feet with blue legs/feet instead of yellow feet with willow legs/feet. One of my splash hens that I got last year has the white feet and blue legs and she is passing it on in some.

I will be getting rid of the white feet unless they are "perfect" otherwise and some of the yellow feet.

I know the white feet are a disqualification, but one more generation ought to get rid of that trait, so if those of you who have yellow feet and willow leg hens should be fine. Or if you are not interested in SOP's for yard flocks, you will be fine also.

I have 48 eggs in the incubator, so these numbers will increase.

KDH, What cute chicks you have there! Thanks for sharing your picture with us!

hunterland, I was just offered a dozen chicks from another source, so I think I am gonna have to pass on the lavenders you have. I absolutely HAVE to cull down my stock somehow!

I have so many chicks growing out that I am running out of housing! What I really need to do is to cut out a few of my breeds. I know I have too many. Decisions, decisions!

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy :

KDH Your babies are adorable!!!!! Where'd you get'em from?

I got them from Meyers Hatchery here in Ohio - it was only about an hour and a half drive. So easier on the little peeps for me to go pick them up than to send them through the mail.

I think they're eliciting some deep subliminal mother-hen instinct in me. I see them and have an overwhelming urge to tuck one under each arm and wander around clucking and scratching at the ground. Hmmm.

I think as long as I don't start molting or pooping on the living room floor I'll be okay...
