Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Here's a photo of my JG from last weekend. Took them outside into their run for the first time. What do you all think? Hen or Roo?

Hi I was noticing the tail. I think it could be a roo but my blue roo was so hard to tell from the pullet untill they were a lot older. I have noticed sometimes its really hard to be sure untill the tail feathers star. My roo's tails are up where as the hens tails are a lot smaller and round tips not pointed on the tail feathers.

My Roosters also looked at me not just in a way of just watching but to really want me to interact. Char

People, the angle of a tail does not mean anything about a chick's sex. . . . It is either a) too young to tell or b) a pullet.

Anyway, looks like come spring I'll be selling most of my JG flock except this girl, because she's so darn pretty of a color. Almost lavender.

I'll be sure to sell the rest of the girls to someone who doesn't know or care anything about breeding chickens for profit/sales, and I'll be eating my cockerel.

After that, I'm gonna face a tough decision on raising/breeding JG's. . .

My roo, Jasper, does the same thing. He turns his head to the side and looks up at me. The first time he did it, I thought to myself, "what's he looking at?"

If you watch your flock outside free-ranging, the roosters are always on the look out, always watching. I think they start this in the brooder.

Their is and old wive tale on sexing chicks that if you wave a wide brim hat over them the girls will srcunch up into little balls and the little roos will stand up and look around. I also aree that JG are so good natured. The ONLY time my roo showed any sigh of hostilitywas one day I was cleaning up the run with a Dale jr cap on. My roo did not like it so he knocked it off my head and did a little dance on it. Now I wear my Rusty Wallace hat and he is cool with it.
