Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Carolyn, I don't think that's a black sex link....they have a much slighter build, and typically have copper in their hackles. Maybe a cross of one, though? If so, you'll definitely get lots of eggies! Always a good thing. I always purhase several production stock in the spring just for my eating egg customers. None of my purebreds lay in the winter (I also do not use artificial light, but those production breeds don't need it anyway).

She's got the nice, dark, green sheen that Jerseys have, so maybe you're right & she's a cross? She is very pretty, whatever she is!

Thanks again. Another question if you have time... Do your Black Copper Marans stop laying in the winter? I'm thinking of getting one soon. If so, do you think a light will make much difference? My DH is planning to put one in.

Yes, they do stop laying in winter.

I would strongly encourage you NOT to add lighting to force them to lay longer. Laying is very hard on them, and they really do need a break...I've had BCM for 5-6 years now, and I have several 4 year old hens that are still laying as well as they did as one year olds; why? Because I allow nature to take its course. Okay, off my soap box....sorry.

I would be very surprised if these were culls as he didn't mention that and did charge us, if I remember correctly $35 a piece for them. Since he is reputable, I would think he would have mentioned they were culls and not charged full price for them. Gee, I'm not sure what to think at this point.

At the very least, you need to work this out directly with him. I'm not 100% sure they are from him....but if they are, please don't take this any further on public forum; you need to work that out privately. You definitely cannot judge based on the price. A good Jersey hen around here goes for maybe $10...out west, a good Jersey could go for upwards of $50. You just never know - it's really what the market will bear. I've heard folks say that a decent laying hen of ANY parentage, even a cross, goes for $10 in other parts of the country, but around here, I'm hard pressed to see any go for much more than $3 - $5, and those are POL pullets. If these are from Martin, I'm confident he'll work it out with you. Also, bear in mind that Jerseys do take much longer to mature than other breeds. Maybe they are an awkward stage right now.

Wynette is right on pricing .
Here any mix or pure point of lay pullets start at $25.00 and up for pure.
I have gotten $50.00 for one orp pullet.
Those are about everyday prices now with the way the economy has been the last few years before it was more.
Like she said I would call him and work things out with them not here or on other sites. It's just the tight thing to do.
Best of luck and I hope you get everything worked out.

Please understand that I was unaware that this person was a member here when I initially posted. I was seeking general information from people more familiar with the breed than I am. My original question was about size and I got a lot of unfavorable replies on the pictures I posted. Public flogging was never my intent.

I have PM'd him and will continue to assume positive intent.

Nothing wrong with asking questions, for sure! BEST of luck...hope you can get your questions answered.

The other side of the coin is - buyer beware. This is a good example of why it's always best to do your research ahead of time...I've seen a few folks who have even gone to farms & taken pics of their chickens for sale, posted them on here & asked opinions. It's also a really good idea to check the SOP and become very familiar with it if you're planning on breeding...I think it's posted early on in this thread, but if not, I or someone else can post. At the very least, you have some pretty gals there that should lay lots of yummolicious eggs!
