Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Jaboo, very nice!! What a lovely flock you have!

HalfMad - cute chicks!!! They'll quickly outgrow the brooder they are in now, though, so beware!

I mentioned yellow feet on the Giants to Silkiechicken, who is raising up some nice ones - here are two pictures that show the yellow feet:

WOW. What have they been eating!? I feed mine a couple scratch grains here and there to keep up the yellow feet.

Thanks for the advice! I've been working diligently on putting our "coop" together which consists of converting a portion of our shed (which is currently used as a pool house & toy storage) into a coop. See: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...of-our-shed-pool-house-into-coop#post_9354559.

Today, I found the PERFECT door to complete the conversion, and I'm excited to get it done before they get too big. On a side note, the chicks have been great for my 7-yr-old daughter's attitude! I just tell her if she cleans her room, she can bring the chicks in there when it's clean, LOL! She cleaned her room REALLY fast! I figured I'd better her bring them in the house now, b/c when they get bigger, they're stayin' outside!

One question about JG's thou: Are they good jumpers? How high will they jump? The reason I'm asking is b/c I need to know if I need to put a ceiling over the part of the shed where the hens will be (about 60" to the rafters, now. B/c if they can jump up over the rafters, they'll be able to get into the shed part, and out of the coop part.

Thanks!

Since JG's are such heavy birds they shouldn't have roosts over 4-5 feet high. They could get a higher chance of getting bumblefoot.

Welcome to BYC!

LOL. Thanks! Wynette's birds make some awesome babies!

They are just eating 24% chick start and grow. The first bag was from "Del's" and the second and third bags have been from Purina, mixed with the left over game bird starter. Nothing special to make yellow feet!

I use Nutrena with my.... "Secret Recipe". It's a mix of sunflower seeds, Calf Manna, Purina ONE Kitten food, scratch grains and grit w/ phosphorus. (It's no longer a secret...)

My JG is going to the last fair of the year in September. Thank goodness she's already started molting... AND GOING BROODY!

hi i have become very intrested in this breed , i would like help breed them to profection, would anyone know of a good breeder i could get in contact with so i can start helping out, this is my first time wanting JG , so any advice for a new comer

Grateful to find you all. I have a wee (as if there's such a thing) JG that's lovely..... and yes, yellow feet! BUT... I have a question. Are pronounced tail feathers on a 5 week old more indicative of a pullet like in other breeds? Is that pretty much a chicken thing??? Not sure of this stuff as of yet, but I'm learning!

Thanks everyone for the information.

HI, Jane! Glad you found us! Yes, I do find that tails on pullets do seem to grow more quickly with Giants. Most American breeds, for that matter. But, by 5 weeks, you should easily be able to tell by the wattles/combs as well. We love pics - post a few, and we can give you some feedback on gender!

I always see worried posts about people thinking that half their tail is missing and it's feather picking. Nooo that's just a Jersey Giant
