Chapter 6
A month later...
Jesse and her friends were waiting anxiously for the humans to come out of the coop.
"It's time," Jesse remarked.
"Um, time for what exactly??" Maple responded.
"Don't you know the humans are going to let the chicks out today?"
"Are you serious?" Joy questioned.
Suddenly, the humans came out and opened the door, and out flew the chicks!
"AH!!! Run!" Faith screeched. All of them took off for the other side of the yard. The chicks were everywhere. In the feeder, by feeder under the trees, under the coop, in the coop, on the ground and everywhere else you can think of. Maple was circling the yard desperately trying to find somewhere the little chicks were not.
"Over here everybody! I found a place to escape," one of the Americauna roosters, Mr. Buckingham(a.k.a Buck) shouted.
"Oh great," Maple complained, "this was supposed to be a fun afternoon, not a 'oh, let's escape' kind of one!"
Jesse was at the age of flying, so she squatted as low as possible, and flew on top of the fence. And down she went! She got right in the face of that strange looking rooster, and said, "Stay in there if you know what's good for you!"
This rooster, Buck, was much different than that evil James Bond. He was quite kind, sensitive and sweet. But Jesse did not know this. Buck looked up at her with his feelings hurt and with tears in his eyes. Jesse felt guilty. The poor little guy, Jesse thought, I must have scared the eggs out of him! She had indeed scared him. Buck walked off and laid under the tree. Jesse flew back over the fence and went to apologize. But Buck seemed depressed. He wouldn't even look at her, which broke Jesse's heart.
"How could I treat a small chick so harshly?" she asked herself under her breath.

A few hours later, Jesse forgot about the whole thing, and so did Buck. Good thing they had short term memory loss! Jesse and her buds, along with the chicks, were having so much fun. Joy coordinated a race for anyone who wanted to participate. It consisted of whoever finds the most worms before dusk, won! The race started at six o'clock. Faith was set for the duty of listening for the sound of the great and loud grandfather clock in the human's coop, which was able to be heard since their windows were wide open.
"It's time!" Faith shouted.
"On a mark, set, go!" All of the participants started digging at once. By the time dusk came around, everyone was worn out! There was a tie between Sherlock Holmes, the other Americauna rooster, and Walter, a Columbian rooster. Everyone cheered for the winners.
"I will be holding another activity tomorrow for the ultimate tie-breaker!" Joy announced.
Jesse and Maple had their eyes set upon Sherlock Holmes, who of course looked much more handsome than Walter, who was still getting his rooster feathers.
"I know Walter's going to win," Pat, a Columbian pullet, said proudly.

Then after the race, everyone was settled down in the coop and rapidly fell asleep.

"Forget the stupid game!" Joy yelled suddenly.
"Why do you always make all the decisions???" Faith yelled back.
"Because I'm the oldest!!!!"
"Ya, by like 3 minutes!" Faith screeched. That got everyone's attention. Even Chewy, the lazy Black Austrolorp rooster. Joy was giving Faith a mean stink-eye. It certainly scared everyone.
"What's going on?" Jesse said as she walked up to the sisters.
"Faith said that Walter should win. Then she pecked me just because I want Sherlock to win," Joy informed.
Jesse turned to Faith and said, "Now why in the world would you peck her just because you want Walter to win???"
"Because he's my_"
"What? Speak a little louder please!"
"Because he's my friend!!" Faith said as she raised her voice. Everyone was wide-eyed.
Faith tip-toed away slowly. She didn't want anyone to know she was 'friends' with Walter, since he wasn't 'cool'. Faith and Joy were on the top of the pecking order since they were the oldest. Walter was at near the bottom of the rooster pecking order.
"I still don't get it," Maple blurted out.
"Soo, what do we do now?" Joy asked.
"Um, just wait for the humans to let us out of the coop, I guess," three Silver-Laced Wyandottes suggested. The fourth one, Wendy, always kept quiet.
Right, Jesse thought, it's still morning.
"When are the humans going to let us out?" James Bond complained. Everybody was getting hungry.
Maple's little stomach started to growl loudly. It scared the feathers off of Pat.
What a chicken, Maple thought to herself. Suddenly, a bright light shone into the roomy coop.
Feathers were flying everywhere as the chickens flew out of the coop.
"We're freeeee!!!" a chicken named Abigail exclaimed.
"Why is it so hot out here?" Faith asked,"it usually feels good in the mornings!"
The flock didn't know this, but this was the beginning of the 70 day journey of heat over 100 degrees in Texas.
a few days later...

Everyone was enjoying the nice cold water in the scorching heat along with treats since there was not grass. All the grass and plants were either brown, dead or both.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Someone yelled from the coop.
