Here it is!!!
Chapter 10
Suddenly, a raccoon came charging out of the bushes towards the chicks!
"Stop right there," Nikki demanded, jumping in front of the coon. It swatted at Nikki, while she tried to swat at it herself. Sandy came running over and grabbed it by it's tail and threw it into the bushes.
"Thanks guys," Fenix said.
"No problem," Sandy replied.
"Oh, and sorry about being so grumpy the last few days. I didn't sleep for what, a week," Fenix apologized.
"No big," Sandy said. "Just try to avoid depriving yourself from sleep in the future, okay?"
"Well," Fenix began, "Gingernut heard Nikki's cry for help in the middle of a night, and we just couldn't go to sleep."
They walked for miles and miles until they reached the end of the forest, where grey skies and a windy plain of grass met them.
"Great," Gingernut bickered. "Here comes a storm."
"We should find shelter," Fenix said. But all they could see was just miles and miles of grass.
"Let's just go back into that forest," Nikki suggested.
"No way I'm going back into that creepy place," Sunny said.
"We don't really have a choice," Sandy said.
"We can't see predators though," Gingernut argued. A bolt of lightning shot across the sky.
"Like we can see them in this grass," Sandy replied.
"Gah. Too late now," Nikki complained as the rain started. "My fur is an official mess."
They didn't have a choice now but to walk through the wet, electrical storm. They were all feeling very cold, but their spirits were warm with anticipation to find their friend. The 3 huddled together for each other's warmth, despite them being 4 months old, while Nikki happily rode on Sandy's back, half asleep.
They trekked across this seemingly endless plain for what seemed like forever, and finally came to a lake.
"Yay," Sunny shouted, running over there for a sip of water.
"No," Sandy yelled, right before Sunny drank from the water.
"Whyyyyyyy," Sunny whined.
"You see those little worm like things," she asked.
"Yeah," Gingernut responded.
"Those are mosquito larvae," Sandy explained. "I once foolishly drank from a pond with those. A few weeks later, my master took me to the vet and I had heartworms."
"What are those," Fenix asked.
"They're different than the ones you eat for breakfast," Sandy explained. "These worms make you sick. I don't think birds get heartworms, but they'd probably still make you sick."
"Awwww! But I'm soooo thirsty," Sunny whined.
"Sorry Sunny," Sandy said somewhat sympathetically, "but with no humans out here, we really can't take a chance."
"Why don't we start hiking up those mountains," Nikki suggested.
"Okay," Gingernut said.
On their way, they walked through a pine tree forest.
"Hey, what's that," Fenix asked. Overhead, something circled around.
"Darnit, ANOTHER hawk?!?!" Gingernut bickered loudly with her beak clenched.
"No, that doesn't look like a hawk," Sandy said. "That looks more like an eagle..."
Suddenly, the eagle swooped down and picked something up...
