Join-Us button on main page banner

Call me paranoid but my browser is set to wipe cookies and browser history every time I close it, so I might have to log in multiple times a day. So Join-Us has been my constant companion for a while now.

If I have to use internet away from the house, I change any passwords I plan on using before I leave, and then change again when I return. I even did that before going to the ER once, which drove hubby insane.

I won't log in for anything on my phone at all, except for an email address that's strictly used on the phone (since nowadays you can't go to a concert or get through the airport without a phone, so it seems).

Would it surprise anyone that my guy is a networking guy? :p
I used to be more cautious years ago when I lived in town, but now we're so far out in the sticks the internet isn't even here; we had to build our own tower to get it wireless.

It sure doesn't hurt to be cautious though!

Sorry if this is off topic, but why are y’all being cautious like that? What could happen? Sorry if that’s a stupid question😂
It's mostly done for privacy reasons to reduce the amount of tracking that goes on whenever you touch the internet. Can possibly improve browser performance by reducing digital clutter. And as it reduces the amount of info that's stored it can possibly help with security compromises.

The changing the password thing is because public WiFi (or even my friends and family's WiFi) is only as secure as whoever set it up made it to be. And... I've seen how secure my family's WiFi is (not... same password for 7 years is never a good idea). My home set up works by requiring each device to obtain admin permission to connect.

Router encryption got way more advanced in recent years, plus the VPNs (virtual private networks) are now available through our ISP, router, or a third party, and became more reasonable. Years ago, it was kids and hackers that would drive around neighborhoods trying to steal wifi. The professional hackers could get into your computer if it was powered up. I recall taking a few complaints when I still worked at the police dept. and one was bad where the lady's checkbook got cleaned out. We found out the person had been parking in her back alley for several days.

It still happens, just not as much, but anyone with an ancient router would be more vulnerable than those with the better security that comes with the newer ones.

It's recommended to change our passwords every 90 days. Two programs I use force the password to be changed. The rest of mine are years old.

Clearing cookiea is more geared towards PC sharing, that won't stop tracking you around the web via IP, DNS, or potientially even MAC address. Still a good practice, but I would also expect you to be using a VPN. Too bad we couldn't have MFA for BYC login though.
