Hi. I have a broody, young Lavendar Ameraucana. She has been sitting on golf balls for about a week. Yesterday I gave her seven eggs. The rooster to all is a 1st generation Easter Egger. Two of the eggs are from Lavender Ameraucana hens. The other five eggs are from Buff Orpingtons and Red Sex Link hens. Expected hatch day is July 28. As for my experience, this is my third broody hen.
With the first hen I made a rookie mistake and gave her 15 eggs! That's way too many for the clutch of an Ameraucana. But, luckily SEVEN of them hatched and are happy and healthy. They are about six weeks old now.
The second broody Ameraucana sat on seven eggs. I purchased the "fertilized" eggs from a local person that I found on Craigslist. I wanted Blue Splash Marans. The Maran eggs were not fertile (she had moved roosters in the pens right before she gave them to me and the roosters weren't courting the hens 100% yet.) She did give me one free Ameraucana egg. It hatched. So that hatch only had one successful chick. She said she would replace the Maran eggs for me.
I do not have an incubator. I like to use brood hens because they do all the work!
Good luck, everyone!
