July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Quick question. I bought eggs to incubate. As I candled them I noticed some of the shells had some clear spots. I don't think that's a good thing. Am I wrong? They didn't look like there was any development. Also the person. Bought them from.. Should I mention-if the shells are like that, they may need to add something to the feed? I know if I sold eggs like that I would want to know they aren't good quality eggs.
Do you mean the eggs where porous?

Well poo, I candled the eggs and had to toss 26 dozen of them. I new there was going to be quite a few but I wasn't expecting this many. The lady I got most of the eggs from had moved all but one rooster out of her pens of 24-36 hens but put them back in after I asked about buying eggs. I did get a great deal for them, only $4 a dozen since there would be a lot of infertiles. That still gives me quite a few to work with.

I'm sorry you lost so many :(

Thanks. I should still have plenty of the pure breeds to pick from. I just hope there is a good male to female ratio. Today I have 30 Buff orphington pullets (couldn't find any eggs of this breed) and 100 black sex link chicks that should be in the post office today. The black sex links are so I can test out my vent sexing techniques. I hope I do well so I can vent sex the rest and not have keep all the male chicks for the next 4-6 weeks. I have been practicing over the last year but have need to test things to see if I am at all accurate.

Porous eggs do seem harder to hatch (they loose moisture faster) and in my experience they seem to not be as fertile for some reason. Plus they are much harder to candle.

I have a bunch of very porous eggs and they are easy for me to candle but I am trying to figure out what to do with them!

I can't isolate them and raise the humidity in that section because there would be no way to make sure they got adequate ventilation and heat when compared to the rest. It seems like those that are porous will die mid development/ are in the process of doing so.

Those that look lethargic, or I can't tell are moving have been marked with an 's' for slow so I know they need to be checked at day 14, then water candled if no movement.

I am VERY excited to announce that I had 3 chicks hatch out in incubator overnight! (2 Barred Rocks, 1 game) As this is only my second successful hatch from the incubator ( after WAY too many failures), I am tickeled!

I LOVE following along with everyone's experiences. Congratulations to everyone.

I put small or porous eggs in a little basket so the fan doesn't blow on them as much or move them to the hatcher earlier and keep humidity a little higher for them.
