July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

I am VERY excited to announce that I had 3 chicks hatch out in incubator overnight! (2 Barred Rocks, 1 game) As this is only my second successful hatch from the incubator ( after WAY too many failures), I am tickeled!

I LOVE following along with everyone's experiences. Congratulations to everyone.

Yay!! Glad you got some chicks!

My 3 Silkies hatched so I am happy.

Hi all, looking for some help with my Silkie eggs. I'm on day 18 now and want to lock down, i have a small dome incubator and the eggs have been set air cell up (I have turned them 3 times a day as well) for the entire incubation. Now that it's time to lock down, do I lay the eggs on their sides or leave them in the up right position? Any help appreciated please!

I really depends how you want to do it. Some people think it is better to set them on their side in a more natural position while others like to put them in cut down egg cartons so they don't get kicked around by the hatched chicks.

Thanks cmfarm, I think I would like to try laying them on their sides, I had no success with my last hatch..it seems like gravity would be more in their favour laying flat. My worry is that the change of position could have an effect on the chicks position inside the egg, being that they have been set up right all this time!

I started the bator! There will be a 24 hour difference between the first egg put in and the last. I'll be super careful taking the first chicks out.

I had terrible nightmares last night about cooking the eggs and/or dehydrating them. I look forward to getting to lock down.

What days do you candle?

Day 7,10,14, and 18 seems to be recommended..I candle a bit more than that though, honestly!

Oh my goodness I have worried so much about that, too. So far my biggest concerns are cooking them and dropping/cracking them. But like cracking them over or around other eggs in the incubator lol. Might be silly but I am with you, I understand.

Day 14! Out of the 42 shipped eggs I stared with, I'm optimistic about 34! They are at that weird splotchy stage when I have trouble figuring out what's what in there, but one egg definitely doesn't look right. Not bad though, considering! Go little peeps go!
