July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Just finished hatching turkeys, cleaned up the bator and set 12 Marans plus 2 surprises. That i found on craigslist and only happened to be 7 minutes up the road. My first attempt with shipped marans resulted in an abysmal 0%. Hoping for a better result this time. Wishing you you all the best for a marvelous hatch.

Aah! I bought shipped eggs last month. They were mauled by the postal service and all of them had air cell issues. 3/29 hatched. The seller sent me a message just after the hatch and asked how it went. She was horrified by the bad hatch rate and offered to send me another box of eggs if I'd pay the shipping. This HUGE box shows up and inside are 42 eggs! My incubator holds 41, there's an egg wedged up against the side right now until I can candle and weed out a few infertile ones. She sent: crested legbars, olive eggers, true ameraucana, marans (lovely dark eggs, and a few Swedish Flower hens just for kicks.

Anyhoo, hatch date is July 16th. HAPPY HATCHING EVERYONE!

What a BEAUTIFUL assortment of eggs!

I set 7 barnevelder eggs last Wednesday. Expected hatch date 7/14.

I have 3 due to hatch the 4th of July, 11 to hatch on the 6th, 8 on the 7th, 7 on the 10th, and 8 on the 16th - all under broody hens. All are game and assorted mutts except for five out of the first round and the 7 on the 10th, which are Rhode Island Reds I am hatching for the neighbor because he does not believe in incubators. I do not know whether to be excited or afraid.

First candling report on day 10! This is from the first batch set 6/21. Of 25 eggs:

Tolbunt Polish: 6/8 moving embryos, including the one my husband accidentally dropped and cracked. We sealed it right away with some wax. The other 2 eggs were infertile.
Isbar: 4/6 moving embryos, other two looked infertile
Hedemora (Our flock): 11/11 were swimming around! So pleased.

The other incubator is 5 days behind, those will be candled next, and weighed. We might try candling the broody hen's as well.

This is so much fun! Our BA went broody about a month ago so we ordered eggs and they arrived today! She set right down on them!

This is our first time with a first time hen too!

Lemon cuckoo orps
Chocolate orps
Olive eggers
And a few mystery eggs!
