July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

I use bandage tape over a little piece of rubber shelf liner to lay the toes flat and tape them down. Other chicks will peck and grab at it so I watch for that. Sometimes the toes straighten out on their own as they start walking, sometimes not.
Thanks, just did that and hopefully it will get better. Will watch how it is later tonight.

Lockdown on 3 lavender orpington eggs and 77 coturnix eggs.

Well, I'm done with incubator hatching for now, probably till the big coop is finished. I have 1 Broody now sitting on 5 eggs, not sure when it added the 5th egg so will be watching it closely if it abandons I finish in incubator.

I got a total of 20 chicks out of 29 that made it to lock down about 70% hatch rate way better than in June. 1 started zipping and died before completion, 7 eggs I just candled and 2 had internally pipped then stopped and 5 seemed fully formed but they had not started to pip, no movement on all 7 eggs so I just tossed them. Will be cleaning incubators and getting ready to store them.

Of the 20 that hatched 1 died a couple of hours after going to the brooder, all other 19 healthy but I just noticed this chick not stepping on its legs right
When I stretch them they are ok but as soon as I put it down it folds them and can't walk right. I have never made a splint for a chick, any ideas?

Congrats on a solid 70% hatch rate, hope I do as well. Hope the chicks that made it do well for you. Enjoy your chickens.

it is still early days. I generally have internal pips on day 20 and hatch on day 21 exactly. Which means temperature is perfect. It's very difficult to wait, and then when they start to hatch it gets worse you worry about every little stage for each egg. You have come to a great thread for questions and reassurance. Good luck. Keep us updated.

Question: I have a PPR egg that had a super tiny crack at the air sac end. I did not repair it. It has developed normally for the past 10-11 days. I just candled it because it is one of the two that I'm most worried will be a problem. The embryo wasn't moving, but no blood ring either. No weeping. No smell. What would you do? Fix crack @ this point? Wait and see? Take it out to be safe from explosion? Right now I have it sort of separated, as in it is in a coffee filter nest away from the other eggs.

I candles my eggs today. Saw one moving which was awesome since this is my first time incubating eggs. 2 just looked super dark. 2 had blood rings :( I decided to,crack one open to see what was going on inside. I guess the little one stopped growing at a few days. It was very sad tho. Don't think I could do it again.i think the other one I. Just gonna double bag and put in the trash.

Are you down to three eggs? I forgot how many you started with. EE, right? Sorry to hear you're having such a rough hatch.
