July 2021 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
My three girls that are due tomorrow are still sitting. The two that are on the floor in the corner are actually letting the one -week -old lay under them. I’m used to co-brooding, but that was unexpected due to the chick’s age.

Anyone around? I dozed off, woke w/a weird feeling, could hear them but no progress from this a.m. I had given them safety holes around 11 after reading and rereading how to assist. So tonight, weird feeling, could hear all 4 of them, figured 5th was dead this a.m. - started assisting.all were shrink-wrapped. Once I got them started they all plopped themselves in my hand, yolks are totally consumed, but it's a little bloody there. What do I do? 20210708_211506.jpg 20210708_212158.jpg

Let them rest a bit. You most likely will have to give them a wash cloth bath as shrink wrapped chicks don't fluff up correctly without one. Also watch for leg issues. The act of pushing themselves out of the leg usually locks the tendons and joints into place so you might have to treat for splay leg for a few hours.

Thank you!

I just found this thread, so I'm joining. I got 7 Cream Legbar hatching eggs through the mail and set them under my broody Buff Orpington. They're due to hatch 7/22. At first I didn't hold out much hope they'd survived shipment because one end of the box was crushed and had no warning labeling saying "fragile" or "live embryos" like I've seen in the past. Obviously the box had some pretty rough handling. But I set them anyway and just candled. There were 2 clear with nothing happening inside but the other 5 look good. I'm excited to see what happens. I'd love some blue egg layers!

1 lone chick hatched. It has been more than a year since that happened. I blame the post office, my local one, for the last minute damage they did to the box. So in the morning I will go to the farm store and pick up a couple of chicks for company. I'm definitely getting a post office box in my old town, they care as the postmaster raises chickens too.

That was my last hatch. I spent all night reading articles to be prepared for whatever this group surprised me with.
