Hope that helps a tiny bit. There are also different types of sex-link chickens such as a black sex-link which has to do with barring patterns of the hen. Im not sure, but I believe you can make a black sex-link with a gold gened rooster (RIR, New Hampshire, etc) with a barred rock hen (barring gene).

Thank you so much for the information. It is so interesting. And it would be great to know the sex of the chicks. (Each year I buy hen-chicks from the feed store and every year one of them turns into a rooster!)

It looks like my first try at hatching chicks did not go well. The only one that tried to hatch couldn't get out of the egg so I eventually helped her. She seems to be doing well but the other eggs didn't hatch. I'm sure that at least six of them had baby chicks in them (on candling there was nothing but black filling the egg + air sac) so I guess the fault is mine and not Randy Rooster's.

Congrats on your big hatch, though. Looks like you did better than 60 percent this year!

I'm sure her toes are fine, they're usually a bit funny looking till they get better at walking. But if you'd like post of pic of its feet while standing and I'll let you know what I think. Not that I'm an expert mind you...
And I'm sorry the others didn't hatch. My goose is a loner to for the moment.

They are a bit turned, I've had some do that and straighten out on their own. Just keep an eye on it, if it doesn't correct itself in a few days you can always send me a pm.

Thank you so much for your advice. I gently unzipped her and she finally pushed out. She was pretty scary-looking for a couple of hours (she's my first chick ever so maybe they are supposed to look that way!) but now she looks more like a chick though her toes seem to be bending in all the wrong places. I hope she makes it because it looks like she's an 'only.' (None of the other eggs hatched).
