***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

Well I peeled the rest of the membrane off, no bleeding. It looks like its belly (for lack of what else to call it) is swollen. There was no yolk outside the body. I rewrapped the chick back in the warm washcloth.

It has made it out on its own, but falls over backwards (Ive had 2 chicks do this, both have been ok). And I know if a chick is helped in hatching, it seems to take them longer to get up and moving.
So I guess we are still at a 50/50 chance right now.
Hoping to get up tomorrow and find the baby up and walking!!!

Congrats to all those with chickys!!!!!!

@ Cloth: Good luck with him! The swollen belly is probably just the full yolk, if he hatched a little earlier than he intended. Give him 24 hours and watch to see if he's drinking anything- if in 24-48 hours he hasn't gone for the water, you may want to give him some manually. I know that they're supposed to have all they need to eat and drink for the first X number of days depending on who you talk to, but the biggest mistake I ever made was assuming this meant I couldn't give a chick extra water when it was having a harder time in the first 2 days.

@ Sweet: I actually don't think that he'll ever catch up in size. I've been discussing this over in the duck forums, and they seem to agree that it's probably a dwarf duckling. There was another lady who had one like this, it just never grew, though it eventually feathered out its still TINY. I GUESS I will take care of an adorable pocket duck... Life is hard when you have to have cute things around you, right?

I wish my other two peafowl eggs would hatch... but I am pretty sure they're dead. I'm giving them another 2-3 days and then I will pull the last 4 eggs (two peafowl, 2 duck) from the incubator and check them for what went wrong. Then I get to order some more!

It does take them a little longer to learn how to walk if they've been helped out of the shell, but they usually turn out pretty well. You might need to keep an eye on his toes to make sure they straighten out nicely though.

My goodness, that micro duck is adorable. I want one! (if only it didn't take such dire circumstances for it to turn out so small.)

ooooooooooooh! silkies are so cute! my mom just gave me a silkie hen to have as a setter.

My buff brahma just hatched 2 turkins! From the eggs I was sure were dead because she had left the nest so many times to set on fresh eggs. I would keep putting them back under her even though they were cold. I had hoped she would keep setting until the eggs in the incubator hatched and I could sneak them under her then toss the ones she kept abandoning. Well she sure surprised me!!

Yeah it was a rough time. At one point he actually had wiggled his head around in just the right way that the gummy inner membrane sloughed off a bit and coated his nostrils. I was checking on him hourly, and from one hour to the next he'd gotten the stuff dried in there so he couldn't breathe! I took him out and used the tip of a push pin to scrape the stuff out of his nose- without being able to hold him still because he was still in the egg. He was snotting out stuff for days after hatching, shaking his head and sneezing. He's doing much better now, though. He wobbles around the cage between the food and the water and the warm, padded sleeping area under the heatlamp. I've still got fingers crossed he'll actually make it to adulthood.
