Ok so after I wrote my last post I couldn't help but go candle the rest! Looks like I lost one somewhere in the last 8 days so we've got 10 now. I saw movement in all of the others so that is super exciting! There are definitely a few eggs that look pretty full, probably on account of a few temp spikes early on, so I'm guessing they'll be the first to hatch. I might have a couple of early ones, then the rest look on schedule when I compare them to the sticky. I'm SO excited I can't wait to hear peeping!!!

@ Sweet: I want a little penguin chicken! That sounds really cute

I wish I had more hands, I could have gotten a picture of my lil week and a half peachick FANNING for me! I didn't know they could do it so young, but there she went! She was standing in my hand looking at me... then she dropped her wings and lifted up her tail and back feathers! I just want to cuddle her forever!

As for the rest of my July hatch... the ducks all get to go to their new home friday.... THANK GOD. They are DEATHLY cute, but they are SO messy and SO stinky and SO loud.... And the biggest one is learning to quack so his voice is breaking like a teen. PEEP PEEP PE-HONK PEEP.

1 chicky has hatched (its only day 20) and there are 2 pips. It looks pretty healthy and vigorous. I am afraid to leave this chick in the incubator when I leave for work, it is making some of the other eggs roll around. Is that ok??

Yes it is ok to leave them. I personally don't, but my brooder is extra warm (with an under-brooder heat pad as well) and they have a stuffed animal to cuddle to if they are the first. I also would not remove it if there are other pips, because you will dry out the other pips.

SweetMotherofMars - The Palouse?! I love it over there. What breeds do you hatch (scratching head, trying to figure out the penguin thing).

GeeVee - I'm excited to hear more about your double-yolker! I assumed those wouldn't hatch for some reason. Very cool!

I hope Mama accepts any additional chicks. I just *had* to go check on them all first thing this a.m. They're in a covered dog kennel setup outside, and she was laying in the grass. Then pop - pop - out pop two tiny little baby heads from under her feathers! I'm so enchanted! I enjoyed brooding chicks myself last year, but it was stinky and messy, and with our temps this late in the summer, I would be concerned about trying to keep them comfortable in the garage. I think Mama's doing a fine job. The little black chick with the rusty head (BLRW cross?) was sitting under the BLRW hen this a.m., as is the newest chick, I think. But the black one came out and headed behind the nest box with Mama and the other two chicks.

Okay, after opening the remaining six unhatched eggs today (woo today's my birthday

) I found one had actually pipped but right below their air cell into a membrane between them and their shell and they suffocated here, 3 more HAD developed but seem like they died day 17/18 because they were in position to pip but had huge yolks still and never pierced their membranes or anything and 2 died MUUUCH sooner as it was very liquidy inside. The one that had pipped though showed me exactly why you want to do this outside with care like I did - it "exploded" when I made the small nick at the top. Made a LOUD pop and shattered the entire shell and almost made me cut myself on the exacto blade. Be very careful when opening your eggs folks! You can get seriously hurt when one decides to explode.

Hopefully some hatching tonight or tomorrow mourning - I will let you all know

(Sorry i have not been on for a while)

At least it wasn't stinky!

But that's *exactly* why I tell people to start their eggtopsies inside of plastic bags XD It would be bad to have an early quitter with tons of stinky liquid explode in your hands!

And isn't that POP just terrifying for the first second, before you register what happened? The first time it happened to me I thought someone MUST have shot the egg in my hand by the noise it made and the way it splattered! Embarrassing, but I actually *looked around* (I was outside) for a shooter and checked my hand for blood before realizing I'd just had my first exploding egg. I was just moving the egg, too, not doing an eggtopsy, so I was totally not prepared.
