***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

I am looking at Charles' cute chick and wondering if my humidity is way to high after all. My chicks never get that fluffy in the incubator. They look wet, but feel dry until I take them out and put them in the brooder. If I hatch again (I've got 4 hens and 2 chicks that might be hens

so I am probably done for awhile) I will have to invest in another form of humidity measurement/management.

That being said, this hatch had huge technical errors so I have a pretty obvious explanation for chicks that weren't well enough to make it out of the shell. I won't make that mistake twice!

Oh yeah, my BCM's are pretty but I was so spoiled by how sweet my Barred Rocks were. These little ones are skittish and stand-offish and not really sweet at all. Bummer. The things we will put up with to get pretty eggs. My husband rolled his eyes at me just yesterday, because I "had to have the dark brown eggs!"

chicks are not only much dryer today but tons peppier XD They SCATTER to hide whenever they see me XD

This is my first incubator hatch, and lock down starts tomorrow. I have been reading like crazy. Today, i read like 16 pages of the humidity discussion in the stickies. So much information, but so good!

Then i recandled all my eggs and marked their air pockets, for the 3rd time, and weighed them all to see how much weight they have lost.

I have 44 eggs left. I think 2 of them might have stopped developing, but i'm leaving them in, just in case i'm wrong.

They're supposed to have lost 12 % of their weight, i read. My average was 10.8 %. I think that's a pretty good indication that i have the humidity doing well for my situation. I hope.

I'm really nervous about tomorrow. It's going to kill me to leave them alone for five days. I really hope they all hatch quickly so i can hold them. I love to hold them.

Mrs. K :

Gone three days to a teaching conference, get back, sneak down to the hen house, and there are my two broodies setting like queens on their thrones! You always kind of worry, that if you are not watching, they might give up. 6 days left to day 21.

I have read somewhere, that often with broodies, they are closer to day 20? But I see several of you are posting early chicks in the brooder, and day 21 with the broodie hen.

I love seeing your chicks, can't wait to see mine. I did not get them candled, got kind of sick, and then just decided to leave it. Hope something hatches! I have 14 under one hen, and I think 15 under the other, started out with 16 each, but some broke. Is that because there were too many, or just a bit of bad luck? Nice big bo girls.

Mrs.K

It seems like sometimes they break the egg because something's wrong with the egg.

With my broodies, i have had day 19 hatches all but one time. I think that might have something to do with egg size. But i'm not sure. I'm hoping to test that theory with this incubator hatch.

AHHH!!! I just went out to check the temp on the incubator....and I found an early hatcher!

It's day 15 of incubation for my quail...and he looks fully formed and quite healthy! once he's (or she's!) fluffed out I'll be sure to add pics!

I cleaned out the hen house today, putting in fresh bedding. lovely fluffy stuff. How can I make it to Thursday? And then I read about these early unexpected hatches, and I think it makes waiting worse. Thank Goodness I have a conference Tuesday and Wed, or I am sure I would wear out my girls by looking at them

Must charge batteries in camera,

please let something hatch! Hoping for 50% that is reasonable, right?
