Ahaha I noticed that too. I bet if you reach your hand under her you'll pull back a bloody stump with a look like that. Ahhh... if looks could kill...

She will accept treats from me, but I am indeed nervous about reaching my hand in a wee bit too far.

Yesterday was day 21 for our broody and her 11 eggs
6 am we noticed 1 pip.. long story short
right now we have 4 healthy vibrant chicks, all fluffy and cute.

As of 9 am today (day 22) there was an egg with a large pip (calling it #5), i could see the chick, way underneath momma along with 6 other eggs.
now it's 2:50pm, I don't think there has been any progress with #5, the egg is moved out in the front of the clutch (which momma has done with the other 4 when they were hatching)
and there aren't any peeps or movement, the egg is zipped (I think that is what you call it, there is a 1 inch by 1/4 in hole in the shell.. like the pictures, the chick is not moving at all. not peeping at all..... and I can't see any more pips on the other 6 eggs.

I candled on day 11 and all the eggs looked good (with visible veins like the pictures of an eggs progression on this forum)
I haven't candled them since..

I figure this is 20 hours from the first pip (in the clutch of eggs)

What do I do about #5
and what do I do, and when about the other 6eggs?

It's very warm here, and our broody is in our chicken coop safe and separate from the other chickens, the temp in the chicken coop right now is 93 degrees, could that be too hot for the eggs?

thanks for your help.

My little GLW died over night

My girls took it Ok as we had prepared them a bit. I got him to drink and eat a little but he never did it on his own. In the end, I don't think he had a splay leg but more of a palsey. Even with his legs braced, he never put any weight on that leg.

Does anyone have any advise for me as to why I get fully developed chicks that die after Day#18. They don't seem to have pipped the membrane, although maybe they did and I didn't see it, but I really think the membranes were intact. I run low-ish humidity during the incubation and stayed 65-70% during lockdown. No temp fluxed during lockdown.

Charles, take it from me (since Mama has been beak-stabbing at me most of the last 24 days!)...it really doesn't hurt too badly! You might get a bruise, depending on her aim and force.

30 eggs under 3 hens only 16 hatched but man are they healthy have almost all there feathers and olny been 3 weeks

Gone three days to a teaching conference, get back, sneak down to the hen house, and there are my two broodies setting like queens on their thrones! You always kind of worry, that if you are not watching, they might give up. 6 days left to day 21.

I have read somewhere, that often with broodies, they are closer to day 20? But I see several of you are posting early chicks in the brooder, and day 21 with the broodie hen.

I love seeing your chicks, can't wait to see mine. I did not get them candled, got kind of sick, and then just decided to leave it. Hope something hatches! I have 14 under one hen, and I think 15 under the other, started out with 16 each, but some broke. Is that because there were too many, or just a bit of bad luck? Nice big bo girls.

@ Sport: I feel like day 18 is judgment day for chicks... either they are strong enough to pip internally, or they aren't and they die. Sometimes I wonder if there's any way to change this, but I've begun to think there's not. It could also be that they are in position wrong to pip, or that they were too big (can often happen with shipped eggs) to position themselves or to move after pip. There's a lot of factors, and not a good way to tell why.

Our bantam plymouth rock is sitting on 1 buff orp egg and has been since 7/1. My hubby went out to get the egg thinking it was a dud and he heard it chirp!!! Its day 22 today so should we be doing anything to help this process along????????

I'm starting to agree. I'm going on day 22 in about 2 hrs and the remaining six eggs are dead silent... I don't think they are going to hatch personally
