***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

This is almost a sickness..... lord we are all crazy..... I read three pips, and I can hardly wait.... who would have ever thought that this would be this much FUN. What do other people do? Do we tell them?

Sending quick hatching vibes your way! Here is to a high successful hatch!

Woohoo! I'm up to 4 chickies...one hatched this morning! To recap, I had 1 hatch Wednesday (Day 22), 2 Thursday (Day 23), and 1 today (Day 26). NOW...as I mentioned before, the 8 eggs under the two co-brooding mamas weren't the same age/development. I think today's might be an early hatcher from the second grouping. I hope to get a couple more tomorrow/Tuesday. It's funny...Mama the EE hen took the first three chickies, and now today's baby, under her management and is VERY protective (i.e. I'm having to watch myself as she's trying to go all "rooster" on me!), and the BLRW is sitting on the rest of the eggs and hatched today's baby. She also, though, appeared to lay another egg herself, the stinker. There are two in there I can't ID the penciled "X" on. One of these two doesn't belong in the nest. I think I know which, but not sure if I should risk it, so will probably leave it under her until the rest hatch, and then will throw it out.

So, if she's laid another egg, does that mean she's not 100% broody? I'm trying to decide whether to remove her entirely after she hatches whoever else wants to hatch, and just let the EE raise the chicks. (EE is a tried and true mama.) What do you all think?

could someone else have laid the extra egg?

But if you have a good mama hen, well there would be nothing wrong with having her raise all the chicks.

I am not sure, but I think that she will accept chicks for a few days, and then won't after that, and may kill any additional chicks.

MrsK, it is almost Monday......the wait is almost over.

I just found this website when googling info about hatching chicks. I guess I am part of the July hatch-a-long!
Right now is the very beginning of day 20, and I have 2 pips

Some of the other eggs are rolling around too! And I am hearing occasional peeps
This is very exciting

GeeVee, is your double-wide egg one of the pips?

I checked and mine was hatched and/or gathered on the 10th... today's hatchlings and pips were from the 6th, so I probably won't get to see my "hatching single from a double egg" chick until then.

Yes, today's hatchlings! Two fluffbutts and 5 more pips. *melts into puddle of happiness* One looks to be a true blue, the other a 'blue penguin', so I'm guessing their momma's were the splash (for the blue) and one of the blues (for the penguin).

The 4th of July babies are all outside in their new home as of yesterday. Decided it was hot enough during the day and there were enough of them at night (20) that they'd be okay if the temps dropped below 60°.

Thanks for the good hatching vibes, Mrs. K! Some people understand. A few. Kinda.

SweetMotherOFMars- The double-yolk-single-chick has not pipped yet. I put it in part of an egg carton w/ the bottom cut out. I put the large end of the egg up because I know that is where their heads end up, and I remember seeing the other yolk on the small end, which is rather convenient. I figured this way, if the little fella pops the other yolk, it will hopefully sit in it rather than drown in it. I am keeping a close eye on that guy in case it needs help.

Good luck to ya'lls double-wides! I officially have six healthy quail chicks now

I actually had to help one out because it tuckered itself out. But it's totally healthy and active now so I'm quite pleased with my first incubation of eggs ever!!!

Heading into lockdown tomorrow night with 11 out of 12 eggs!!! The 12th egg had to go last week because it was infertile but I'm so pleased with how many developed! I've candled 5 or 6 of them over the last day or two and I've seen movement in every last one so fingers crossed for 100%

I've been dreaming of hatching eggs for the last 3 or 4 days and I can't wait to have babies in the brooder again!!!
