***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

Today is day 20 for 6 of my eggs and I have my first pip! DH thinks I am crazy because I am always checking on them and now he heard me talking to my eggs the other day.

Woo hoo! I've made it to day 5 without having a nervous breakdown!

Unfortunately I'm still having a little trouble with my bator. Humidity is spot on but the temperature keeps fluctuating. Every time I think I've got it dialed in it throws me for a loop. Last night I checked it 5 or 6 times over the two hour prior to heading to bed. It was spot on at 49% humidity and 100.9 degrees (I've got a still air hence the higher temp). So I go out to check it this morning... Down to 97.8!

Its SO frustrating. I just hope it wasn't down that low for too long.

In any case, I'm starting to look forward to candling to see what I'm working with. I think I'll wait for day 10 since I'm a newbie and it will be a little easier for me to see whats going on. And hopefully I'll get this temperature thing under control before we go out of town on Friday. We'll only be gone for 2 days but I will be worrying the whole time if I don't have it settled by then!

Mine are under a broody hen, but I was too thinking of waiting til day ten, then I looked at pictures on here and I think it might be easier to see about day 8. I mean if you get the spider web looking thing, you should be a go. The pictures of the older eggs, have this dark spot that is the chick, but also might be a dead spot.

AND I don't think I can wait. mk

With brown eggs its kind of hard to see it but on day 11 we was able to see the spider web veins really clear and you can see the baby bobbing around in there.
I tried one on day 9 I saw nothing I worried maybe it was dead put it back marked it with an x so i would know it was the one I looked at.
Then day 11 I took the kids for the first time to look at every one of them we then marked each one we saw with veins with an A and a # then put them back under the hen.
Its just easier for me that way to keep up with what I saw and how they turn out.

Blue eggs a little easier, and green eggs also......white eggs are way easier to look through.

I had my lap top on and it did make it difficult to see at first so I had to make the room completely dark before I could actually see anything from the brown eggs.

Good luck!!!

That's good to know... I'm hatching Marans eggs so they're extra dark. Probably not the bext for a newbie candler but hopefully I'll see something!

Chicks hatching! woohoo!!!

My first ever hatch and with a broody too!

My broody was given 11 eggs. I have no idea what breed. Could be Americana, Barred Rock, White Rock, Golden Buff or RI Red - or a mix. Mystery chickens! 6 have hatched...2 are missing...3 still under her along with the new babies. They are so cute!!! They all seem healthy so far....keep your fingers crossed.

I'll try to get better pics of the chicks so we can play "name that breed"
