Mrs. K :

A bit of a wreck??

For the first time, I caught one of my broodies off the nest. She had an egg stuck to her, and when I looked at the nest, it looks like two eggs broke. A mess everywhere, and even a couple of maggots. Ugh! and smell.

So while she was out and about, I pulled the eggs off, pulled out the nesting material, put in new nesting material. Then I wiped with my hands the worst off the eggs. I dropped one, and that had a blood spot, so at least they should be growing.

But try as I might, it did not clean the eggs up too good, I used a bit of hay, but even so. So I went to the house and got a warm rag. Now I didn't scrub the eggs, they are still not perfectly clean, but I did get the big chunks of yolk off of them. Some eggs were not too bad, and a couple of eggs were covered.

I waited before I left and Butter went back in and settled down on her 'cleaner' clutch.

Was this a good thing to do or not?

I did check Sunshine, she did not get off, but she does not peck me either, so I just lifted her up, and hers look ok.

mrsk

Once, i had a mama who forgot to get up for her daily constitutional and went right on top of her eggs.

I also cleaned them off the best i could withOUT getting them wet.

I found that over the next couple of days, the heat and friction of being under the mama wore most of the remaining nastiness off of the eggs, and they hatched just fine.

I know you see plenty of advice about not washing reasonably clean eggs, but this is another situation entirely. Rotting egg yolk all over the place is not a healthy environment for anything. As long as the eggs didn't get too cool, I don't think you did any harm; leaving egg yolk on the shells to feed bacteria and maybe flies has to be worse for the developing embryos (I've had gunky eggs fail to hatch before). Hopefully, this'll be a fluke, and the rest of the incubation will go smoothly!

well I was up 2 eight but woke up to a deceased baby. Also going to lose the yellow button, crazyt little guy, I couldnt find him this morning and i went to moving stuff round in the bator and there he was UNDER the plastic UNDER the wire.....jeeze no clue how he got under there! They are so tiny though. Anywho he never really gathered all his strengths, the ones that hatched today are better off than those that hatched yesterday! Had to remove the rest of the turn since the crazy little guys were trying to get stuck in it! Well I will update when I get home from work and try to add pics.

Congratz, kjhowe77!! Lovely little fuzzy butts!

Today is Day 21 for me and so far one EE has hatched and I have 3 pips, all blue eggs. I'm so excited! I'll be running out every 30 minutes to check the progress.

I'm a proud mommy!
